I am in the market for a car but I have no idea what I want. I will probably get a second hand car. I want something that is economical on gas, reliable and preferable good to look at and cute. Any suggestions?

How about a 2008 Audi A6 4.2? Very fast, safe. Can't wait to turn 16! Only thing is maintence and it is a gas hog. If you want something economical than get a Golf TDI. Lots of torque, great gas mileage, extremely reliable too.

Everything has it's advantages and disadvantages.
Small safe cars often become targets.
Let me explain what I mean by that,
Say you are driving along on a two lane road. Some stuff happens with other drivers, and there is an accident forming ahead of you. You realize you have two options, both suck, you can hit a truck, or hit that little Honda Civic, which do you choose? The Civic.
With that said, they are great little cars! I do like them a lot, but it is something to think about with anything small, however if you are not in America this should be less of an issue.
Japanese cars tend to be cheapest. Cheapest to buy, maintain, and very economical on gas.
German cars are sure nice and fun, (I have an Audi RS4) super fast, luxurious, comfortable, however there is a significant list of negatives. Gets rather terrible gas mileage, and takes premium fuel making the gas super expensive. It's no secret the maintenance for German cars sucks too. TDI is a great option for both of these, still powerful, muuuuuuuch better MPG, much more reliable, however, diesel is expensive, but with the MPG gain it more than compensates for that, and it's still a German vehicle. Maintenance still sucks when it needs to be done, or should you get in an accident, parts are very expensive.
American cars...well...they're American cars...some are good, some not so much. Flip a coin and let it decide.
My first car was a 2005 VW Touareg, LOVED it, put it on it's roof in a ditch.
Replaced it with a 2007 Audi RS4, love that too!
I've always done German, but my dad runs the service department at the VW/Audi dealer, so the repairs have never been a big deal to me. I do know what they usually cost though, and I must say there is no way I could afford either of these, especially the VW, if I didn't get the service through my dad.

If you can afford and find a Subaru, go for it. If properly cared for they will run for 300,000+ miles. Plus they just look good. My aunt has had 3 Subarus, all which have done about 350,000 miles, I'm on my second one, and my mom has had a few. Extremely reliable. Also with the AWD they're a blast on snow, and off road. The only drawback is they can be pricey- around $10,000 for a 2008, $5,000 for a 2003, but they are well worth it in the long run.

Yeah a 3 series is good, and yes no surprise there. My family has only ever had german cars and that A6 I mentioned earlier will be my first car. Why a Cadillac DTS? Even old people don't like them. How about a 2004 BMW 328? Those things were probably one of the last good bmws.

For an affordable car, Subaru has to be at the top of the list. Parts are cheap, gas isn't bad, and really the purchase price can be reasonable if you look around a bit, even with that said $10,000 for a 2008 isn't really a bad deal. My boyfriend is a huge Subaru nut and the cost of his cars vs. mine are insane, and his are also modified. He pays significantly less for just as much of a car!

Camry. Camry's get good gas mileage, they are extremely reliable, and the newer ones aren't bad looking cars.

My first car was a 98 Camry, and I loved it. She was a little old and definitely used, but she never gave me any trouble.

Get on your local Craigslist and find something cheap.

You really don't want to look luxury (especially German) if you're going for a car that's older than 2006 if you're on a budget; you'll be looking at extremely expensive repairs. The normal service (oil change, etc.) on a Benz/BMW/Lexus etc. will usually run you ~$200 depending on where you live. Repairs are even more expensive - the coolant thermostat in the engine of my '08 C300 went out and the total cost of the repair was $800 at my local MBZ dealership.
