So I was looking up A Dose of Buckley videos last night and I came across this one. Now, I always considered myself a pretty big music enthusiast, but he made great points in this video that made me re-think how I perceive music and music "fans". It's interesting how people get so jumped up about music more than any other form of entertainment.
How do you feel about this video? Is music actually inspirational? Are music artists actually role models or are they just entertainers? What are some song/artists that actually make an impact on your life? What music genres do you love/hate?

Warning: As any A Dose of Buckley video, this contains explicit language. Hopefully that won't be offensive to anyone.

I dislike his videos in general so there's no way I'm going to watch that but given what I know about him he probably tried to judge people based on the music they like and his personal opinion.

he got something there... there's way to many common "music" fans, but i see myself as a rare music fan. i prefer rock and some metal, but i can easily listen to pop or indie or something like that without hating it

I'm the "common music fan" as portrayed in the video, or, as he'd like me to say it, a metalhead. But... he got it wrong.
Introduction: Yeah music is way ahead from movies (2nd), reading (3rd) or TV (4th). He also didn't include games, which is seemingly quite important, especially to the teenage demographic. By the way, TV and Movies are still very similar.
Reason one: Your consideration and choice of definition on "x" fan is quite different. If someone is fanatic for a subset of "x", he is not necessarily a fanatic for "x". Okay, but since no one at all* is realistically a true fanatic for "x", the using "fanatic for x" meaning "fanatic for subset(s) of x" is accepted and commonly used. I like soccer, hockey, baseball, cricket, ping pong, tennis BUT I don't like equestrianism. Nope, now I'm just a fan of the subsets soccer, hockey... tennis of the sport set. Really?
Sports is still silly? What about religion/atheism? Oh, I'm an atheist, but that catholic guy over there isn't religious. Why, because being religious includes being a muslim, buddhist, shintoist, wiccan, islamic, and so on.
I'm not a metalhead. I just like Heavy-, Power-, Progressive-,some Death- and Technical Death-, Thrash-, Crossover, Speed-, Stoner-, Sludge-Metal fan. :D
And the opposite could have also been exaggerated. Extremely exaggerated to the point it doesn't prove a point.
I'm quick to say that Funk Carioca sucks. I'm quick to say that modern Pop sucks. Why? For reasons I can explain that go beyond just personal belief. Funk Carioca is the worst thing I've heard: there's one single beat used every song, the lyrics condone ridiculous consumerism, drugs, promiscuity, anti-police themes, promiscuity, euphoria and being the boss of everything. Accompanied by a brainless slum guy or girl "twerking" her butt to the ground. On a kids TV show.
Also, aside a few genres**, there's no real fighting upon which genre is the best, at most some fun discussion. This post clearly shows my point - there isn't any war or whatnot: Black Metal vs Death Metal - Metal Tracker (http://en.metal-tracker.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=1156).
Oh you watch Soap Operas? Man up bro! Oh you watch animes? What a nerd. I hear these everyday and people complaining about that.
Reason two: He errs again, music can be a very important thing in one's life. First of all, music IS important. On the contrary of what he says, this is what you need to live:
Food
Air
Water
Shelter
Love, for reproduction is necessary for a "successful"*** life
Society, humans are very social animals
Some sense of fulfillment and happiness
Take out someone's love, one's social life and happiness and see what you get: a suicide, or at least a really depressed bloke. Entertainment fills up some of the happiness that we need to live. It can be uplifting and supportive.
Why are some fans so supportive and defensive when it comes to music? Same thing as religion, you're trying to strip away something that holds their life. (Even if a JB fan doesn't understand life.) Yes, music can be a very personal subject. Not to Buckley, of course.
To say one is a product and one is art, both or none, you must define what is a product and what is art. I personally define art as a work that has a function of keeping the artists feelings contained within it and reproduced in within some style. Is Narnia with all it's christian references art? Yes. Is the effort put in from band members to make a music that pleases them art? Yes. Is a pop music co-written by 10 people, sung by one guy and follows the same format art, with the sole purpose of making money art? No. Is Taylor Swift art? Yes! Is Justin Bieber art? Nah. JB's music is just a product, a pop music commodity.
Is all music a product? Yes, but be wary of how many people do it as a side project because the music itself cannot provide sufficient income. Many do it for fun, and to share it with the world as a meager 10 dollars for its access. Not on commissions.
Reason three: because of reason two. Why are some fans so supportive and defensive when it comes to music? Same thing as religion, you're trying to strip away something that holds their life. (Even if a JB fan doesn't understand life.) Yes, music can be a very personal subject. Not to Buckley, of course.
And by the way, following the somewhat collective idea that's quite present on the forums... Yes, you did make it. Without your and other fan's support, which music artist would be able to attain success? No one. Music would be synonymous to personal project. Many people have contact with some music group members.
And guess what? Attachment to a car is completely rational, you earned it. Attachment to Twix bars is rational, you love the induced dopamine from it. And so on.
Hope my opinion is heard!:D
*: good luck finding someone who likes country, salsa, harsh noise, stoner metal and Rebecca Black. **:Metalcore, Deathcore, Grindcore, Alternative Metal and a few other forms not considered "truly metal". ***: Darwinian point of view.
