People in the UK who go online and illegally download music and films may have their internet access cut under plans the government is considering.

Six million people a year are estimated to download files illegally in the UK.

Music and film companies say that the illegal downloads cost them millions of pounds in lost revenues.

Some of the UK's biggest internet providers, such as BT, Virgin and Tiscali have been in talks with the entertainment industry over introducing a voluntary scheme for policing pirate activity, but no agreement has been reached.

So far, they have failed to resolve how disputed allegations would be arbitrated - for example, when customers claim other people have been "piggybacking" on their internet service.

"ISPs are no more able to inspect and filter every single packet passing across their network than the Post Office is able to open every envelope," the association said.

"ISPs bear no liability for illegal file sharing as the content is not hosted on their servers," it added.

In Canada it's legal to download music free off the net

And movies fall under file sharing...so I don't think thats illegal either

Yea but when you download or file share you didn't get the license to use it, so therefore you are infringing on copyright laws. It's the very same as walking into a shop and stealing a hard copy of it. Surely Canada can not say that is legal to do?

I know that different juristrictions have different interpretations of the legality of peer to peer and the like but this is the unauthorised distribution of copyrighted material, surely that can not be legal.

Because of the fact that so many millions of people do it, they'll never stop it lol. Also the ISPs will secretly be wanting this to contuniue because people pay more to get good speeds and bandwidth for downloading stuff.

I'm not sure on the legality with movies
but i do know the Supreme Court of Canada decided that its legal to download music free off the net
nobody's ever been charged with piracy for it here...not that i know of anyway

Personally I use iTunes music store and just pay for it (i've probly spent well over a grand there over the yrs)
if i really like the band I buy the CD
and I always just go buy or rent my movies
but..ya
