Of course it's OK. You can use something bigger if you want, just be sure it won't break off. A banana or zucchini work fine, esp the zucchini, it has more flexibility. Just start with a small one, though.

I've tried, but I don't find it to be a big deal. Wearing a rubber glove makes it less gross.
