So my laptop is starting to go downhill. I'm at the point now (or I'm at this point again, I should say) where it needs to be plugged in all of the time, it's slowing down, it's just aging. It's 6 years old now and for it's age I have to say it's still running well and I'd like to try to get as much more life out of it as I can, but I do have to start looking around for a new laptop. I have a Macbook right now but I'm not sure if I can really afford a new one. Does anybody have any solid recommendations to point me in the right direction while browsing?

MSI is the best laptop you can buy right now they are a decent size canadian company that is really putting out great stuff and are making a name for themselves. Google them about reviews and laptop quality they are top notch. If not that id Recommend Toshiba or sony. I love my vaio but my next laptop will be msi 100%

I have to disagree with fordguy on toshiba, they have really shitty customer service (atleast in the US, atleast) we had a laptop that had some defects, and they refused to repair it under warranty, even to follow the state law that extends warranties that we had when we lived in maine, however HP was happy to accept it and practically gave me a new laptop altogether.
so I'd go for HP.
As far as laptops go, what is your price range? and what will you be using this for?

I really liked my old gateway. It lasted about 3 years, though I'm not sure if you're going to find an affordable product for a reasonable price (aka under $1k) that lives longer
if you're on mac now i'm assuming youre not a PC gamer, so yeah. Didn't have any video problems for normal browsing, my art programs (FireAlpaca and Sketchbook Coptic - yes both are legitimately free) didn't have issues, didn't have it crash at random, put up with being dropped several times.
I've heard good things about HP too, though the only ones I've used have been heavy (5lb+) and slow.

Seth is screaming in my ear to tell you to go with a MacBook, but you're right, they're waaay too expensive. I have an ASUS, and I've had it for two years now, and have had no trouble. Plus, it wasn't crazy expensive, I bought it on saved waitressing tips.

MSI is more expensive than Macbooks in terms of pricing. Better quality for sure, but I don't think you're going to be able to afford something along the lines of that. (Though I WILL recommend ONE MSI laptop before this post is done)
First off, we need to know your price range. What you're willing to spend helps a lot in the way of narrowing down which brands are right for you. Second, we need to know what you're primarily using it for: gaming, school work, video/audio editing? Computers, laptops specifically, have a wide range of uses, and what you use them for definitely fluctuates the price. Third, we need to know what specs you're looking for, such as:
1. How much hard drive space you need
2. What type of CPU you're looking for
3. What kind of graphics processor you're looking for
Really, this is what I focus on when someone looks for a laptop recommendation.
Now, what I will recommend is the MSI GP70 2OD-027US. Now, while this is specifically a GAMING laptop, you've got a lot of longevity in a computer that is built for gaming. For one, you'll be getting a processor that will more than likely last for a few years, you've got a 1 TB hard drive to give you plenty of space, 8 GB of system memory, built-in Nvidia graphics (which is not bad in itself!), and a ton of extra little features (HD webcam, gaming keyboard [which is pretty spacious by the looks of it], etc.). You'll also have a 17.3" display, which, I believe, is larger than a Macbook.

I had an Acer Aspire and it worked pretty well. It was reliable, & lightweight. If not then a Lenovo or Dell also are good quality laptops.

I just bought a Lenovo T500 with 2.53GHz CPU, 160GB HDD, 4GB RAM and it only cost me AUD$220 refurbished.
I haven't got it yet, but I recon it will be good.
I guess it depends on what you need.
Maybe if you would like another MacBook, you can find a refurbished one at a discount price. (That's if you like having a refurbed laptop :P)
