I usually buy computer parts from newegg.com and i highly suggest them.

I don't think you can build a custom laptop.

I bought a Gateway NV5207U in November for $480 and its brilliant. 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, AMD Athlon 64 X2 QL-65 (a bit old but definitely not slow). Its perfect for basic things, and can run HD video nicely in Windows Media Player (not so great in Quicktime).
