Now that I believe the History Room Forum is closed, I think this may be the best place to put history related topics, as the members who post hear may have the most knowledge of it.
My question is:
What are some of your Historical hero's?
These may be people you look up to, take inspiration from, aspire to be like, or who have changed your life.
Some of Mine:
Benjamin Franklin- I believe he is one of the wisest men to live, but I mostly look up to him for his achievements, and the fact that he was self made (meaning he started low, into a poor family, but through self improvement, he was able to achieve success)
Abraham Lincoln- One of the greatest Presidents, as well as a man of outstanding character and ability to overcome obstacles. He was completely self made, being born in a poor agricultural community and receiving barely any education, he was able to learn everything he knew through reading.
Martin Luther- Not Martin Luther King, but the founder of Protestantism. He questioned the Catholic church, the highest power in the land fearlessly, with only a desire to remove the materialism of the church, and create a more individualistic relationship with God, not a religious one. As well, he showed that one should not truly conform, and respectively question.

George S. Patton: He led our soldiers in the European front, helped create organized tank strategy, and had a take no crap attitude about how he lead. Hell, he even has a tank named after him.

Charles Darwin, a brilliant man who discovered evolution and natural selection.
Isaac Newton he created the basic rules of physics.

Actually, you'd be sitting still under a British flag.

Sir Isaac Newton- Contributed many concepts in Physics (motion laws and gravitation) and, along with Liebniz, established modern Calculus. He also calculated, with an astonishing degree of accuracy, the orbit of the Earth around the Sun that proved the Earth's orbit to be elliptical; this was revolutionary at the time because for centuries people believed the orbit to be circular.
Abraham Lincoln- While the nation was divided and in conflict, Lincoln stood firm with his goal to unite the South with the Union. Without the Emancipation Proclamation, the North would not have had the motivation to push for victory.
Harriet Beecher Stowe- Her abolitionist views helped write Uncle Tom's Cabin, which allowed the North to see the oppressed and cruel nature of slavery and fuel the abolitionist movement. Although her book did help lead the United States into Civil War, it helped slaves to later receive their freedom.
Mahatma Ghandi- His peaceful protests against British rule in India helped India receive their freedom and inspired the likes of Martin Luther King, Jr. to peacefully fight for civil rights.
Albert Einstein- Contributed many theories in modern Physics such as the Theory of Relativity and additions to Quantum theory. He also contributed to astrophysics and the exploration of the universe, and he inspired the likes of Stephen Hawking, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Brian Greene.
And there are a few other historical people I find inspirational that I will list later.

Actually, you'd be sitting still under a British flag.
We couldn't have won the war without him, blitzkrieg took us by surprise, France was captured and we was pushed back.
He moved children to the country side, made fake airfields to take bombs instead of the real airfields.
He always opposed appeasement which if we didn't do we could have defeated them easily. He thought on even when all odds was against him, some sources say Hitler wanted to allie with us but he stood up for the British people and what was right.
Other things did help for example the huge Soviet involvement, really helping on their for example Stalingrad and the Americans did help by sending us arms as after all we are a tiny island we needed more arms.

All three Kennedy Brothers
JFK- the leader of Camelot, helped redefine the 1960's, stopped the Cuban missile crisis, signed the limited test ban treaty and help start the American space project, he had a clear vision of US foreign policy and would of ended the cold war if he had another term.
RFK- lead the charge against Cuba, stood up to organised crime before it was popular, reformed the office of Attorney General and helped the civil rights movement, one of the best presidents that America never had. His vision in '68 was truly amazing
Edward Kennedy- One of the most important senators of the 20th Century, despite the personal hardship of losing both brothers he became the leading voice of liberalism in America

Theodore Roosevelt- Former President of the US; He is my historical hero because he was not afraid to speak on issue that were controversial and he defended them. Besides, this man was a fucking badass! Name one guy who got shot in the chest STILL survived, then continued to give a speech.
Martin Luther King Jr.- He was an ambassador of peace. He led the Civil Rights movement through numerous plots to kill him. He was a pacifist and he only wanted freedom for everybody, not just the African Americans but for the Jewish people, the Latinos, Women, the LGBT community, everyone.
Now they weren't perfect but they were pretty good people for their time period.

I'm unamused by the lack of variety in this thread, so I will bring some to it.
Lorenzo "The Magnificent" Di Medici - Was a patron of the arts and a person who helped carry the Renaisance.
Ernesto "El Che" Guevara - Even though he did help to bring the Castro to Cuba his actual purpose when doing the guerrilla fighting was very good, he actually wanted to heal humanity, just that Castro was an ass to him and sent him to die while he became as bad as Batista.
Pelé - The legend of legends, a person who after retirement became a UN ambassador as well as a sports minister, someone who thinks that sport can unify people for a good cause.

A few people come to mind immediately, all of which had a profound impact on the world.
George Washington: Helped the US in our battle to gain Independence with from the redcoats, and turned down the opportunity to be our king, which has lead to one of the longest survivals of democracy in human history.
Jesus Christ: I mean, he founded a religion that gives two billion people a moral foundation. Need I say more?
Neil Armstrong: The first of about only a dozen men to set foot on the moon, and the most recent of the great explorers.
Winston Churchill: When all seemed to be lost, he held through and helped lead freedom to victory through the darkest hours of world war two.

Interesting that you choose the Kennedy family. I thought you opposed allowing families to create empires and passing billions on to their heirs? Or do they get a pass because they are on the left end of the political spectrum?

Nothing wrong with the Kennedy family- they earned all their wealth- there was nothing hereditary about it. They came over as immigrants in the 1800's and worked themselves to the bone. They didn't really have an empire did they? They were pretty much outside of the US political scene after '68.
And sure I'd much rather the Kennedy's than the Bushes, their catholic centrists so they hardly agree with my world view but for the 1960's they offered a good alternative to Nixon

One of the true heroes of British democracy, back in 1642 when King Charles stormed into Parliament to demand the arrest of 5 MP's Lenthall famously said that he had 'no eyes to see and no tongue to speak''. He stood up for the right of parliament to the King of England and set in motion a revolution

I hope you understand that in America this is the norm, the wealthy have generally earned their money fair and square.

"A good alternative to Nixon." What a high bar.

So what? You expect a country of three hundred million and the world's biggest economy to have zero white collar crime?
The US, historically, has been ranked among the highest in income mobility.

I do, you were attacking me for liking the Kennedy family on what I assume is my anti-monarchist ideas.
In the 1960's the only alternatives was Nixon and Goldwater, so yeah compared to Goldwater Nixon was a pretty high bar

They lived pagan and peaceful, and were openly hostile to Venice and the Byzantines, they were exterminated after many ardous struggles by the Byzantines in the 9th Century I think.
