Major differences between college and high school; study/workload, difficulty, classes...?

What were some expectations that you had about college that turned out to be true/not true?

Ricko: I love my school, I mean obviously there are always those people who are going to annoy you but for the most part i have my group of friends, mostly in my dorm and I love them!
The work is dependent on the class. Like my English class is hard and i have 4 papers assigned at the moment but contrary to that I have a gym class that requires zero work
Mirman: I think my biggest false expectation is that I was prepared. Throughout high school i was a 4.0 student and graduated in the top 7% of the class but college was a lot harder than i anticipated. No one reminds you of assignments and you don't always get your grades back. Teachers don't care when you don't sow up, its on you.
YoungandMeek:
Major differences: Freedom, the workload is heavier and its all on you. You get a syllabus at the beginning of the semester and that is your lifeline. Classes are longer and the teacher doesnt tell you when to take notes. And I've found studying harder because your room is your home amd at any given moment people walk in and out of your room to bother you lol
Ausley: I go to Pace University and it isn't all about straight As like there's a lot of conversation and I can go to almost all of my teachers they will help no questions asked. For some classes however, your entire grade is 3 tests so studying is important
Blood: there is so much freedom you won't know what to do with yourself!! Like i recently turned 18 so my driving restrictions were lifted so i sometimes go out at 12 just because i can and no one will stop me.
No one???

Did you take an entrance exam or something?

What do you mean by entrance exam? Like placement tests? I took an English one, a math one and there was a language requirement as well.

How many classes do you take at a time and what is the in and out-of-class time commitment for each?
By the way, this is a great idea!

This semester i had 6 classes and about 3 of them required outside work. I would say anywhere from 1-3. Hours per subject. It really varies.
This semester i had 17 credits, and next semester i have 5 classes and 16 credits
And most of my classes are 2 hours an one is 3 hours but there are breaks and we are not usually in class the entire time.

Thanks for the answer.
What do you hope to major in/get a job at?
Have you started taking specific classes having to do with your major yet or is freshmen year just your general requirement classes?

I am majoring in Childhood Education with a concentration in English and I hope to be a teacher first and then I want to get a phD in child psychology and I hope to be a clinical child psychologist
This upcoming spring semester I am actually lucky enough to be taking 3 classes related to my major. My school is unique because it starts major courses earlier than most other schools. During the Fall Semester I was able to take the first part to the math required for my major. This spring semester I will start observations, I will be taking the second part to the math and I will be taking a literature course which will fulfill a concentration class :)

Oh I've been looking for a thread like this, hi there!
I'm in my last year of High School and will almost definitely be going to college. My questions are:
1) What's the timetable like? Generally speaking, is it 5 hours a day?
2) How many courses are there? Can I study anything there?

Hello!
What do you mean by timetable? Hours in class? HW? I see that you are in the UK so I don't know if college has the same meaning, I mean university.
Anyway,
If you are talking about hours in class it varies. I have days where I only have 1 class and am done in 2 hours other days I'm done in 6. Homework usually takes 3 hours for me but that depends on the classes.
You can study anything and there are a multitude of classes, a friend of mine is even taking scuba diving!

I'm gonna chime in a little too, and god does this make me feel old! (Not a bad thing as I find I'm always surrounded by older folk these days anyway)
The amount of courses you can study are going to vary depending on what school you go to. Larger state or city-type schools are more likely to offer large general-education courses while allowing you to take specialized minors or interest subjects whereas smaller private or specialized institutions are going to have more specialized fields and courses.
From my own experience - the workload was not bad at all. You're on a very flexible schedule especially if you're planning to leave home like I did, and the prep I got out of high school was definitely far more than enough. The timetable thing isn't set, at least not for me! I found I could be at school for anything from an hour to twelve hours a day, but when you're doing what you love and enjoy doing, hell time goes by so fast.

Oh hell no, don't get me started about the maturity of some twenty/thirty something year olds I've had to deal with.. :banana2:

This is. Dependent on you. I am paying a lot but my school has a program tat only 25 schools in the ountry have, i start major classes 2 years earlier and my school has an 82% placement rate for teachers, which is more than double the national average. So for me it certainly is
