View Full Version : Mom and laptop

So, me and my mom had an argument over my laptop a few months ago. She blamed the laptop as a reason for my failing grades, the reason I am failing is because I was sick for a month and I was not able to study. Anyways, she took my laptop to work and put parental controls rationing 5 hours over the week. I got pissed because I go to a IT school, and I can't do my homework related to computers when my laptop shuts down in the middle of it. Last weekend I screwed up some drivers for my Windows 7, so my dad (my parents are divorced) let me use his PC to download Ubuntu (a distribution of Linux). I installed it but I didn't tell her because she would go nuts. Anyways, she took my laptop to work today, and I need to finish my homework. Any ideas how to bring this up with her?

Maybe if you tell your teacher your situation
he/she will explain to your mom how this is
hurting instead of helping you with your school work.

Hey, ask your teacher to explain to your mum why you need a laptop for school work. I'm hoping this will let your mum know the importance of it.

I agree, if you talk to your teacher/professer then they can possible tell your mum that your computer can't have any controls on it; or at least make it longer than what it is now.
And seriously, you have 5 hours PER week? that's outragous. I'd die without my computer. I keep everything on it.

Ikr, she thinks I'm addicted. The reality is that I couldn't keep the pace, even now I am struggling.

I will try to talk to her. If she refuses, I will tell the teacher or my class supervisor (they organise parent meetings where the parents can see what grades you have and to solve problems between students).

Talk to her man. I mean I'd understand it if you were only doing games/facebook on it and addicted to that but if you need it for school then that's a whole different situation. Good luck man

That's a good idea. I hope it will go ok. :)

It turns out she took it to her colleague because she thinks it's broken, the CD drive is, but the rest of it is fine. I told her about installing Ubuntu, and she was OK with it. She said her colleague will see if it's a driver error or a broken piece of hardware. It went way better then I thought it would.

That's fantastic news! And that's good.

I know :), I just hope it's a driver error with the CD drive. I don't want to buy an external or replace the existing one.

They aren't expensive, so don't worry about it.
