There isn't a whole lot of benefits from creating a steam account per say, but it does allow you to download any of their games straight from steam, and allows you to chat with friends from any games connected with steam :3

Go for it, it's really good, its easyier managing games, demos , and a bit of software. And yes it does allow you to chat with any gamers you meet.

Well, OP, if you want to be a PC Gamer, and want to play at least 90% of the games that are released, you're going to HAVE to create a Steam account. Why? Well, because it's a DRM activation service to make sure your copy of the game is legit. There's no real "benefits" of having a Steam account. It's not like they reward you with having one for so long or whatever. But there's a very large community in Steam.

You've also got some of the biggest games there on the market right now. You can also download games for free, like TF2, DOTA 2, and a lot of others. There's also the Steam sales, which occur every so often, that discount games up to 80 percent off their retail price. So yeah, I guess if you consider those "benefits", go right ahead and sign up. You also have something called "SteamPlay", where, if a game supports multiple platforms (Steam supports Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux), then you won't have to buy a game multiple times for different platforms. You buy a game once, you own that game for all platforms it supports!

Steam is really great. However, it takes forever for me to actually have the games load or for Steam to pull up. Other than that, it features a great selection of games and has great deals near holidays. Also, you get access to communities and can communicate with your friends via Steam platform. Hope you enjoy it :)
