I think you have discovered the need for intimacy. The way you have described it, it is a more important need than sexual release and once you have it you don't need the sexual release.

I wouldn't say the same is true for me - I feel like I need both. Sex happens to provide both in the same package.

My girlfriend is really into the intimacy short of, or prior to, sex. Hugging, kissing, back scratching etc. I like it but it tends to make me more horny rather than less. Often it leads to sex, sometimes not. Sometimes I get her off and she seems to get more horny too and we end up having sex.
