sorry if this is in the wrong section:

So I've never actually seen the Star Wars films and have only seen bit of them. A friend was appalled the other day when she learnt this fact.
Having seen another clip from one film I want to try and watch them. But they all seem complicated to me with all the force and tattoween planets and complex names etc. is it really what hard to understand?

Also can someone tell me what order they goin beau case have done some research online I saw here the trilogy then the sequel and number 4 came out first then 5, 6, 3, 2 and 1. What? Why?

So what order should I watch them in and why?

Thanks.

Also if you could fill me in on the main characters and who they are (I know, my naivety) it would be greatly appreciated!

I advise you watch Star Wars (aka episode 4) first, then The Empire Strikes Back and then The Return of the Jedi. Those were the first to be made. Then after you watch 1 2 and 3 you could watch the old ones again :D I think that watching the original films first give you a better understanding and appreciation for them. Just my opinion though.

Also I wouldn't want to tell you all about the characters. Better to just watch the movies, you'll understand a lot better that way.

Okay. Thanks. Why what number 4 first? I mean that defies all logic. Why was it done in that order?

Episode IV is the first movie (in order of release), it was actually episode I, but since the prequels were made they moved the title. So he is telling you to watch it in order of release, and I, as a massive Star Wars fan, would agree with what he told you.

If you know nothing about Star Wars, then do yourself a big, fat favor, and see the original trilogy (IV, V and VI) first, or you're gonna miss one hell of a twist! :D

Everyone else is right, watch episode 4 first, then 5 and 6. Then watch 1, 2 then 3. Episode 4 was meant to be the only Star Wars film, it was originally only called "Star Wars". But it made so much money that the studio asked George Lucas to make a sequel to it, which became episodes 2 and 3. Then 16 years later he started making the prequels, which are episodes 1, 2 and 3.

The first 3 films to be made (Episodes 4, 5 and 6) are the best for story and acting etc, but the effects look a bit dinky compared to movies today.

I like the originals. I'm not a big fan of the prequels.
I have to agree with the other posters. watch them in the order they were released not the way they are numbered.

My dad is such a Star Wars fan I have seen
them all over and over since I can remember.
The Star Wars that came out in 1977 was just
Star Wars. It was a stand alone movie.
Everything else is either a sequel or a prequel.
So... Watch the original first. Do it cinema style.
Largest screen possible, lights off and volume high.
You will love it.

Watch the originals first - 4, 5, 6. Then if you want you can watch the prequels - 1, 2, 3. Personally I like the originals more than the prequels
