I'm writing a novel in a class I'm taking (it's called OYAN - One Year Adventure Novel) and I don't want mine to be a little 72-page thing. What are good ways to increase word count? We're only allowed 12 chapters.

Quality over quantity. Sometimes the 72 page novel is 10x better than the 500 page one. I mean, The Great Gatsby is an excellent book and my copy isn't even 200 pages.

I guess I'll have to remember that.

Like the username, it's from Greek mythology, no?

I agree, even if it's short, if it's good, it's a win win situation.
I do have to say that Stephen King doesn't follow the rule Quality over quantity. His books are both long and amazing.
