So me and my friends bought a hookah. It's about 1 foot long and with one hose. Well instead of using coals like I told them to, they just lot the tabcoo itself and smoked. Is that bad or should we use coals? Because now now my throat hurts and idk if I should do it again. I asked them if their hurts any said no. I. Also have a cold and my throat was hurting a little, do you think the smoke irrit or is it because the way I smoked it? And please nobody telling me don't do it and all that because it's not good for you. Just answer the question.

You can smoke shisha without but seriously, you want coals. If you just take a lighter to the tobacco it will burn too fast and hurt your throat and lungs. Which probably irritated your lungs and made you more susceptible to a sore throat and cold. Coals are between 3-10$ each depending where you buy them but they are very worth it if you're gonna smoke hookah.

As everyone has mentioned beforehand, use coals. The coals provide a source of fuel for the hookah and using direct fire onto the tobacco can burn it and make it harsher and less smooth.
