Damir Mamic from the southern town of Trogir made a home video pretending to be an invented character Commander Shamil and has in January this year called for attacks on police stations, offices with EU flags, bridges, railways, bankers and all the people who support capitalism.

Police soon located and identified him.
He kept saying he thought no one would take his joke seriously. However, the public prosecutor has still accused him of supporting terrorism.
Damir Mamic is employed in the local Brodotrogir Shipyard in Trogir.

I think some people take things too seriously... I mean, I doubt he'll be jailed and obviously it was a stupid idea to do this but I think the government needs to back off sometimes

We have freedom of speech here in America. We can joke all we want, It's not like the guy said he was gonna blow up a building.

This happened in Croatia
This just another example of governments taking things too far. Here, in Texas a teen was arrested earlier this year over a sarcastic terrorist remark on Facebook. He was incarcerated for 5 months but during that time, he was so abused and depressed, he was placed on suicide watch. But luckily an anonymous donor bailed him out.
But this still shouldn't even happen. They're helping no one by doing these sort of things. You'd think that they would do a little more research on people before arresting them over a little joke that harmed nobody.<_<

Oops, maybe he should just know what not to do. Yeah its a shame if he actually was just joking, but nobody's dumb enough to not know the potential consequences of a joke like this.

Ummm, freedom of speech means that I can say anything without restrictions. What you said is not freedom of speech because you restrict what people talk about. That leads to tyranny.

Technically, no, it's not. You see, freedom of speech comes with its limitations. For example, I can say "I hate X and Y" but I can't say to people "You should all go and kill anyone who supports X or Y". That promotes terrorism. I think the police force were in their full rights to arrest him.

If that is to be taken as a definition of freedom of speech in Croatia, a lot more arrests should occurr due to Croatian nationalism or hate speeches. Those speeches promote genocide and terrorism, so people doing that should get arrested. Unfortunately it's not happening. All rallies for terrorism should be taken with same measures, not cherry picked like in Ex-Yugoslav countries.
