What exactly is it and why is it a bad thing?

Bumping is when a member posts in a thread that has been inactive for longer than 2 months.
The bump rule is in place to keep VT fresh. It would really annoying if someone excessively posted in old threads, because that would bury the new ones.
There are however exceptions to the bump rule:
If you are bumping a thread that is yours, it's fine.
The other exception is in some member diaries. If it is okay with the owner of the diary, you may bump threads in their forum.

It is a bad thing because if I do not
notice the date of the original post,
I will end up answering a question
that was asked back in 2012 and feel stoopid.

So i've been thinking about this and i don't really get it. Often times i have seen a question that i would totally be able to answer really well, but i can't cuz then i would get banned. I should be able to answer these kind of questions, and the OP should be able to receive the help that they are seeking, even if its been two months since the last post. Also why can u bump your own thread?

You can bump your own thread because it shows that you're still interested in having your questioned answered or you still need help or whatever the reason is for creating the thread.

There's no reasons to be posting in threads that are years old, even if you know the answer. If the OP is still seeking help, they can bump their thread.

That makes sense, but shouldn't, after two months, the thread be made so no one can post in it? then it would prevent us all from unknowingly posting in a 6 month old thread

^this. I mean, I almost never remember to check the post dates. And I don't want to get banned or whatever because of it.

Then you'd have no way of bumping your own threads, and it doesn't make this place all too inviting to have a bunch of locked threads on the third and fourth pages of the boards, plus, depending on the topics, some can go over their limits at a mod's discretion
