Okay so I have a question. In my photography class my next assignment is to take pictures of autumn, but the problem is that its kind of hard to find that because I live in South California. Any ideas?

Fall foods? Pumpkins, squashes, pies, pumpkin pie, pumpkin spice lattes (just basically anything pumpkin).
Fall clothing? Boots, scarves, and the like.
Fall activities? Thanksgiving, football, and such.

To be honest, fall leaves and pumpkin spice lattes and anything else "Fallish" are pictures anyone can take. I could go out, take some beautiful pictures of trees and a halfway interesting angle, print it, and it'd look great, and so could you, or most people who've used a camera before.
Try to think outside the box a bit. What does fall bring that isn't around during other times of the year? Is it raining more, colder, windier, are people out more/less? Take a picture of a scene that doesn't necessarily scream
"THIS MUST BE A CLICHE FALL PHOTO OF LEAVES AND PUMPKINS AND HALLOWEEN"
but maybe is a bit more subtle in what you're trying to get across.
Of course, there's nothing wrong with taking pictures of trees or foliage landscapes, or anything like that. The pictures look very nice, and people will look at them, but try and take pictures that only you can take; ones that other people wouldn't, or couldn't, take.

remember you dont have to go out side to take the photo. try taking a few leaves and isolate them or try giving the leaves some human characteristics (give it some emotion, in other words, personification)

I got some great autumn pics in Las Vegas.
Course it's way past autumn foliage time in
the Southwest a month past the OP.

Photographers would go near and far to accomplish any assignment! To take any autumn pictures, you would go far if you have to to really get what you need! It is a challenge that you as a photographer should accept despite any distance! ~

I'm also in Las Vegas. We don't have that much trees as I would like, but there are a lot of activities. idk...take a macro of Starbuck's holiday drinks...if you see a car with an xmas tree on top, snap away as long as their on public roads/property...you're in cali, i'm pretty sure u can find something! :)
