Nothing bad happens if you pop them.. When one gets larger than the rest, I usually just squeeze it till the little oil ball pops out and it's good. Sometimes they start to come out by themselves if I haven't showered, like if I'm camping, and you can just scratch and rub them away, but the little cosmetic bump always stays. Like Wikipedia said, it has a correlation with oily skinned people, so in a way they are sort of pimples.
