Certainly, like any other board games, chess is a game!

I consider it a sport, but only cause I am biased since I have participated in national-level chess tournaments.

Casual players like myself, a game, to the pros, a sport.

it depends on how you play it. if it's just a casual game with friends at the dining table, I consider it a game. if its a competition, it's a sport.

Both, can be a sport if done competitively

I've always considered it a game. Does anyone honestly think that chess is a sport?

I consider it a harbinger of death and destruction. Why wasn't that an option?

Does anybody play chess as part of a secret, underground organization? Like Fight Club, except it's Chess Club? Where menacing thugs stand around shirtless and sweating waiting for their turn to play. That would be neato.

I would say it's a game.

Unless, of course...it's full-contact chess. Then it's a sport.

It's a game; if done competitively, it's a sport. Although I would still call it a game, not a sport...it just sounds odd to call chess a sport.

It's a game. It shouldn't be fair to call chess a sport, if it is then I'm saying monopoly is as well.

A game. I suppose you could call it a 'sport of the mind' if you really wanted. But I don't class it as a sport.

Chess is a sport in my opinion. It's a lot of brain exercise.

I consider it a game, but for some reason, people look down upon it (and other activities) because it's not a "real sport." I respect people that play chess more than I respect people that play some physical sports like baseball. Hunting is also considered sport, but I still think chess is a more useful and more difficult thing to master, even if it is "just a game." It doesn't have the physical requirements to be considered a sport, but it has just about everything else in terms of a large following, competitiveness, etc.

Chess in not a game nor is it a sport. Chess is a battle of strategic planing & careful consideration.

An excellent motto that you can apply to chess & too life is: Defence is the best offence!

I think it's a game, but being a game doesn't imply that it's trivial or uncompetitive.

Instinctively, a game. But come to think of it what's the difference between a sport and a game?

i would have to agree with an earlier post it is a game / hobby to a casual player but to a pro it is a sport, it is like anything take golf for example it is considered a sport to someone competing against others to win a match or championship but to someone who just has a few clubs and goes to the course a few times a year to enjoy them self its more of a hobby or any other sport for that matter but to someone who dedicates their time to practicing that sport or activity to be the very best you can be at it they consider it a sport like me with football or basketball i put my heart and soul into those 2 sports to be the best i can but i also play baseball with friends for fun as a hobby baseball is definitely a sport but i just play it as a hobby and social activity but i would never say it isnt a sport.
If someone considers what they do a sport because of the time and work they put into it i would never try to tell them it isnt a sport that is just disrespectful and whats the big deal if it is or isnt we all have our own opinions and views on whats considers sports and whats not or what classifies something as a sport but that is my feeling on the issue.
