So,do you guys believe that a person's playlist reveals who they are.I listen to all different kinds of genres but when I mention rock, eyebrows are raised and I get asked if i'm goth(which i'm not). What do you think?

Well I listen to rock and metal and I am aggressive and easily annoyed, probably because one of my favorite songs has these chorus lyrics:

"&%$# off, I'll take you on!
Headstrong to take on anyone.
I know that you are wrong.
Headstrong! We're headstrong!
&$%# off, I'll take you on!
Headstrong to take on anyone.
I know that you are wrong,
And this is not where you belong."

And another has these...

"I will not bow! I will not break!
I will shut the world away
I will not fall! I will not fade!
I will take you breath away!"

So I guess it's a possible theory.

Not really. I mean, I listen to everything from grunge to rap to jazz to funk to reggae and so on. I don't think it says anything about my personalty, it just says I like a lot of genres of music.

It could let you know what is on that person's mind a lot.

For me, kinda. I listen to a lot of rock and metal which have lyrics about being strong and like "fuck you" to people that insult you, which is what I need sometimes

I think in some cases it is possible, for example, I love listening to songs from musicals, and I'm an actress and that is a huge part of me. However mostly it is a huge stretch.

I'm a very fidgety, happy, energetic human.. And I love jamming to upbeat songs,
but my main playlist is very soft, very deep. I don't connect with songs associated with major chords, I'm more, doomsday. It's sad really, but I feel like all my music on my phone explains who I am!

To a certain extent, yes, I am a happy person and I listen to salsa, which is usually happy music, especially when you dance it.

Not hugely, I mean I love all different sorts of music so I dont' hugely think so. I definitely think you can guess someone's mood from their music, but not their personality.

Sometimes. Btw: I'm a huge fan of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.

I don't really think so.

for me 70% of a persons attractiveness comes from their music taste

Well... It is possible to a certain degree. If a guy likes black metal its ussual that he doesn't really like god and if some other guy likes tekkno... he probably tried some drugs..... loads of them.

I don't think so. Not without knowing anything else about that person, anyway. Sure, there are people who listen to songs whose lyrics means something to them, but you still can't figure them out completely just based off the kind of music they listen to.

Ugh that's so annoying I listen to death metal or really heavy metal so some people have decided I'm goth/emo. I mean I do wear black a lot but that's just because black is sophisticated... I think it would be somehow linked to their personality, I get quite angry sometimes especially about injustice or oppression which a lot of my metal songs are about. I don't know though, most people are surprised at first when they realise I listen to metal.

I wouldn't say that it describes your personality but more of the emotions you are feeling at the time it normally relates to that

I don't like to think so. I think music does make up a small part of a persons personality but then again it would because why would you listen to music you don't like? Different people hear music differently. My best friend would hear a metal band and cover her ears saying it's only noise, gives her a headache and it's shit; her favourite artist is Ed Sheeran. I listen to the same song and it calms me down. It's weird really. People interpret music in many different ways, that's why we have stereotypes in music genres. Thats why when some people hear another person listening to slipknot or another heavy band you get the terms 'emo' and phrases like 'go slit your wrists' but in reality it's not like that at all and if they took the time to listen to the lyrics they'd probably be uplifting with the frontman telling you to 'hold on'. I've gone off on a massive tangent here but yeah, music can potentially tell a lot about a person but at the same time it might just be one massive, offensive stereotype.

I think that a lot of times people's personality do match up to different styles of music, because, like me, they gravitate toward music that they can relate to. For example, I often listen to metal and punk rock, and beyond that more obscure artists. I'm a short-tempered and impulsive so I relate to those styles well.

Yeah, I myself listen to a lot of rock, usually heavy death metal. If anyone asks me if I'm emo I'd show them Gorgoroth lol

I have no idea. If that's true, my personality is probably insanely disorganized.

maybe not their outward personality but maybe their deeper feelings, how they view themselves, or even something subconscious

Maybe not entirely, but surely some bit of it.

I listen to a lot of Anarchist Punk music, as well as New Wave and Synthpop. (I listen to a lot more, but these in particular.)

A lot of people would affiliate me with being depressed. Although I also think this has to do with the fact that I AM actually depressed, and I tend to not smile a lot. Sure, I laugh a lot, but I don't really smile that much.

Personally, I think when digging deep, you can make an estimation of what kind of person someone is, judging by their music. Although at the same time it's kind of unreliable because a very quiet, angel-type innocent boy or girl could listen to the worst, heaviest, grossest music imaginable, yet a very aggressive and/or mean person could listen to; say Mozart or Bach.

Just giving an example. :what:

That sounds possible. In my case it would be true! :D

Well my personality is shy quiet nervous etc but I wear all black like if I came back from a funeral. Skinnies and band tees, and I listen to rock and metal which can give you an eargasm or a stroke :)

I wouldn't say their entire personality, so to an extent it might suggest their inner and deeper emotions. I listen to uplifting music and stuff that will cheer me up and inspire me; that could tell you that i'm a happy person and like upbeat music, or it could tell you that i get a long bus journey early in the morning and need inspiring music so i'm not a morning person. Music can play a vital role in people's lives, its's nice to think that it can reflect the type of person you are but that's not always the case.

If they're listening to anime music, you got an otaku there son

But I definitely believe personality is taken account when someone "discovers" their music genre.
Hell, people listen to different tracks on different moods! If when mentioning ska and reggae incites the idea of asian culture for you... then you really dont judge! :D

I listen to a lot of Pink Floyd and some Reggae and other types of "stoner music" but I've only smoked pot like twice.

My answer is sometimes.

To some degree yes. If you listen closely to songs I play it's usually how I feel at that exact moment, or the tempo is what I feel but not the lyrics. I've actually known people who listen to every song in the planet tho and don't relate to any of it.

Hmmm I don't think the genre of music you listen to can tell your personality; but I think lyrics do. Personnaly I like when lyrics apply to my situation. There is a recurrence of themes in songs I've been listening to for ages.

I love most genres of music.. Like I love Bastille and Will.i.am and they're totally different so I don't think you can tell..

I believe it is a bit of both. I listen to a hell of a lot of heavy metal / death metal and I am a typically funny laid back guy. But some people you can tell by their music.

Wonder.
January 1st, 2014, 04:10 AM
I don't think you can at all. Otherwise people would think I'm really happy, nice, weird, horny, and suicidal when only weird relates to me.

I know people who are really cruel who listen to mainstream pop like Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus and some of the nicest people I know listen to bands like Slipknot and Avenged Sevenfold and all those other bands whose shirts were once sold in Hot Topic before they started selling Justin Bieber shit. You might sometimes be able to guess the music someone listens to by their personality, but you can never guess a person by their music preferences.
