Does anyone have any coping mechanisms I can use instead of SH? Not methods (like the butterfly) to stop cutting, but things I can do instead of cutting.

why do you cut? if you know that it is pretty easy to find a distraction:)

That is a good question. I would say I gained a feel
for that after spending a few weeks with a school
counselor. Keeping a daily non-self harm calendar
has helped a lot. Putting a nice red slash across each day,
has helped a lot. It is like "maybe I'll slash the hell out of
myself tomorrow, but not today". For me personally I make
fun of myself over it, which seems to help. Coping mechanisms
are very personal things for me, that I don't know if I can
put into words. It is mostly playing mind games that work
on me personally, which I was able to discover through counseling.

I try to use self expression as a way to cope. I write my feelings out, but there's also art or music. Exercise is also a good way to release stress!

I go to the gym, play guitar, play video games, talk to people and at a last resort go running and don't stop until my lungs burn (i hate running and suck at it)

I cry and make seizure like movements to rid myself of anger and stress, and I punch things and break stuff when I really can't take the heat... But that only happens when I'm really fucked up. I prefer to watch youtube videos or draw stuff to get my mind off things.

Keep your hands occupied. Also maybe try look for music that helps you to express your feelings. You could try to meditate, it can help to relax you and keep you focused. Recently Natalie (1_21Guns) posted a link to a website that I think is useful http://www.getselfhelp.co.uk/
and there's this training program called MoodGYM (also found through Natalie's links) that teaches you coping mechanisms and how to couneract negative thoughts
https://moodgym.anu.edu.au/welcome
So far it's helped me avoid SH. Hope this helps :)

Going jogging/running can help. Also, believe it or not, but masturbating when you get the urges can also help. So you could always try that aha :P Good luck :)

Yeah, personally I cut for the endorphins, so the coping mechanisms that work for me are exercise and playing piano.
But the best ones will depend on your reason, like it's been said. Is it the relaxing high you get from the endorphins? Is it the physical pain distracting you from the emotional? Is it to punish yourself?
