View Full Version : Is Religion Dying?

I was thinking today that two generations before us (our grandparents), a good chunk of people were very religious. Then the generation after that, (our parents) not as many people were religious, but still somewhat. Now we are in our generation. Our generation has a lot of technical advances to the degree that a lot of people are really questioning the Bible's logic.

What do you guys think? Please correct any mistakes I have made in my claims for this debate because I am not as educated as some of you in this subject.

As people have discovered logical solutions to things more and more have joined the deist/agnostic/atheist side of things, and the numbers have kept increasing, so the answer is yes.

Yeah, we are a much more secular generation. However, religion is still very powerful and it's not going to disappear any time soon.

Yes it's definitely dying. However it won't disappear completely...there will always be some religious people

It is fading, but will probably never dissappear.

I always believe there have been revelations both for and against religion in the past. It's not the first time there's widespread neglect or angst against religion. Even the bible had account of people against, or forming their own religion.

From what I've been reading I wouldn't say its dying. but from what I've seen at church..I'd say either people are moving away or it is declining in popularity.

It'll be ignorant to say that religion is dying. Its still everywhere and tons of people still believe in religions.

Traditional religions may be dying in the West (we can only hope for the Middle East eventually) but I don't necessarily think belief in God, or theism is dying, hopefully just transforming. I know I'm definitely not a "traditional" Christian.

Its still always gonna be there, especially Christianity. Some people dont go to church/turn away from religion, and its usually the high schoolers. Who knows, they might pick up religion later on in their life and it will come back.

Religion itself will never completely die out when you have places such as the Middle-East where religion basically rules everything. The US is still about 70% Christian, it wont be dying out anytime soon here in the states.

To tell you the truth, I've never even met a Atheist in real life, only seen them on the internet.

Yes, I think religion is dying out too.
You see devoutly religious people in poor parts of the world.
They want/need a reason why bad things happen to them and to continue living.
Now that technology is advancing and raising the standard of living, people don't need that hope to get through life as much.
There is also the scientific evidence that makes religion illogical.
People like how science cures Polio but not how it depicts the universe?
They're starting to see the conflict in their views.

I think "dying" is the wrong word. Diminishing? Maybe. But I don't think religion is dying, and I can say with (almost) complete certainty that it never will. It's just a part of society, it always has been and always will be.

I do agree with the premise of what you are saying, though. Things are certainly changing.

Religion is probably just as prevalent now as before, the difference is it has faded from government, not necessarily people as a whole. True, many people are atheist, but many were before, it's just that now people talk about it more openly.

What scientific evidence makes religion illogical? To me, the question of theism is unrelated to science considering God's primary existence lies outside of and independently to this entire Universe. I really never understood that atheist argument, why do atheists even bring up scientific proof when the subject by definition (according to many religious people) lies outside of it? I guess they claim that science has removed a compelling reason for belief in God, but it is not illogical or irrational to completely and strongly disagree with that view.

I just read an article in the paper about all of this today! I think it definitely is on the decline, I think I'm the perfect example of all of this. My grandparents were quite religious, my parents a little less religious and then there's me... not at all. I still have some beliefs, but I'm not the kind to read the bible and live by it etc. I have no problem with peoples religion, I do have a problem when people attempt to "teach" me about it, I'm just not interested. It's like one of the most important life rules of respect, just cause you don't believe in it, doesn't mean that others shouldn't be allowed to. Sorry I just ranted a lot, but I have a very specific view on this. Anyways, I think that people are slowly becoming less religious, but there's no way that religion will die out completely.

No one in my family is very religious. We say our prays on Christmas and thanks giving but we don't go too church.

I think it is dying, because more and more people are thinking like this (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/showthread.php?t=195201). With technology readily available to everyone (if you don't own a computer, you can use the library, or your phone, for example) logical, rather than spiritual, answers are more easily found and explained. People are becoming more open - think about how much less homophobia there is now than there was 20 years ago? It's the same with religion. People are more open to new ideas and science and discoveries, and some people are throwing their religion out of the window. I witnessed it firsthand as my mother did that. She used to be deeply religious but now I'm not sure if she even believes in a God, and if she does she believes in it as a very different thing than before.

I believe Religion cannot die, for Religion to be alive all it needs is a vessel, I & so many others are the vessel for Religion. Does this make sense? Do you agree with the above statement

Being a Practicing Christian, I believe in The Trinity (The Faher, The Son & The Holy Spirit). I have not always been Religious but I converted early 2012. Let me pose this question to you all "If a family such as mine have been Atheists for generations & I became Religious how is Faith/Religion are dead or dying?

I love to have a good debate/discussion about most things friend me & PLEASE keep this thread going by contributing!

Peace be upon all,
Henry VIII.

Religion is truly disappearing because people have finally started to realyse that religion is useless, pointless, an dangerous.

Everyone is right. They only way for religion to truly disappear is for there to be proof that the background for every single religion physically and logically cannot and did not exist. While the numbers are diminishing, there will always be that ONE person that will still hold to their beliefs until the very end.

Dying is much to strong of a word. People are gradually becoming more secular and less religious - especially in the Western world. But you all seem to think that this is a new concept when it's not. It was called the Age of Enlightenment. This movement started in the late 15th century and promoted logical reasoning and individualism rather than solely faith and tradition. This movement is the basis for all the secularism that we are seeing today. But religion is much too tied in with culture for it to die out completely. And right now, as it stands, around 8/10 people in the world (http://www.pewforum.org/2012/12/18/global-religious-landscape-exec/) still subscribe to a religion.

i disagree its not fading. u have people of the mainstream orginizrd religions convert to other branches of their religions or to other mainstream religions or to alternate relgions.also u have people who never followed religions getting into alternate religions like say for example the pagan religions.in the usa paganism in all its forms is the fastest growing alternative religion. people simply have to ignore the intellectuals and media and their claims that religion (in all its forms)are dying or just fading.this simply is not true its manipulation of the truth by so called intellctuals and the media.

Just because most people YOU know aren't religious doesn't mean the entire concept of religion itself is dying.

it better be or i'll kill it myself

Eh, it may be in some places. But I know that my religion is doing just fine, especially here in the Bible Belt. Less people my age believe in any sort of God than in years past, but you can't hardly find an elderly person who doesn't.

I think that dying would be the wrong word. Fading seems better, but people could fix this but its a personal choice.

Being the jerk I am sometimes: I definitely hope so. In my opinion religion is the biggest scam humanity has ever gotten away with. That, and the whole "government" thing.

Don't even get me started on how annoying religious people can be sometimes, just trying to shove their beliefs down your throat. I'm sick of it.

Its fading...not dying. religion will always be a part of society. noted not many people are extremely religious, but it will never die.

From what I've personally seen, it's not really dying as such. People are just starting to move away from the common religions and are beginning to develop their own beliefs, even if based on an established religion.
