Well I suppose, with not much to do, pushups and situps are very easy in cells. Especially since most prisons allow weightroom time.

^ This.

In prison, what can you do??

Stare at the ceiling
Die slowly
Get ripped

I suppose its also to do with prison being such a tough place... If you appear weak, you'll be targeted by other inmates. I think the idea is, if you look tough, people will think you are tough... I may be wrong ...

I'm not sure if the environment directly evokes an anabolic reaction, but I do think that this alone doesn't explain the whole phenomenon. There's a number of factors that play an important role:
-They can lift
-They manage to meet their macros. It's fine if they eat a lot prison food (I imagine some inmates manage to get extra servings if they threaten others and steal their breakfast/lunch/dinner), because all that matters is macros/micros (so calories and vitamins/minerals respectively). You can eat a lot of things and gain/lose/maintain your body weight, just google IIFYM, it's pretty much science these days. If they get enough food, the diet bit's covered. I also read a study where someone explained that foods like canned mackerel (''Macks'') were used as currency among inmates in a certain prison.
-They have their connections. And with that I mean they know where to get supplements like whey and creatine, and even drugs like anabolic steroids. You can smuggle a lot of things into prison, we all know that's a fact.
-There's plenty of time to rest. What do prison inmates do? Nothing. Their bodies get a lot of rest. I'm sure they have plenty of time for naps and so on!

also don't forget the fact that steroids can and are easily smuggled into prison for an affordable price. Just look at Khali Muscle.

My guess is that they were ripped beforehand.
They probably had a lifestyle that demanded it.

That pretty much sums it up, if I were in prison for whatever reason I would exercise all day, since there isn't much else to do.

I have a cousin that was in prison and got buff in there ,so I asked him about steroids and protein supps in prison and he nearly died laughing.
Before he was released from prison he had been transferred to 4 different ones and said there where no steroids and no supps being smuggled in.

Oh and he and been in for 6 years so he'd have had time to find this stuff out.

Lift, eat, rest. <--- that's a secret formula, so don't go telling everyone.
