Expert claims software updates are engineered to make older models useless!

Catherine Rampell, a New York Times columnist, said Apple could be engineering new system so it only works on the iPhone 5C and 5S
Rampell also accused Apple of trying to ‘brainwash’ its customers into buying the new iPhone 5S and 5C because they look nice

Apple could be deliberately making your iPhone slower when a new model comes out, an influential tech columnist has claimed.
Catherine Rampell, who writes in the New York Times, said that Apple could be engineering the new operating system so it only works properly with the newest version of the product.
She added her iPhone 4 became a lot slower when she downloaded iOS 7 - and that the only solution seemed to be to buy the iPhone 5.

If it was obvious, it would be obvious. Developers would know about it. Newer software is usually larger and would therefore require more power to run smoothly. It's a natural effect.

1. Apple sucks at making new software compatible with previous phones
2. It seems like it. My 3GS CRASHED trying to download IOS6. Now I'm luckily not tolerating Apple's bullshit.

This is actually such a good marketing strategy.

Everybody want's apple products, then they make iOS 6 and practically make the iPhone 4 obsolete, so people go and upgrade. Well played Apple.

I agree with what everyone has said here. They just want your money, they are the worst at making new software compatible with older phones (way worse than android and WP), which is why I don't bother with their products. Not everyone wants to or can afford a new phone every 6 mos/year

This is why i have an android!

Newer software often has more features that require more resources. It's designed to run as smoothly as possible on the most recent model, so of course it's going to run slower if the device doesn't have the processor speed needed to run smoothly.

Its basic marketing, products will either slowly degrade or be very fragile so that you eventually will buy another and give them more money

Well, this is slightly different to what this topic is about.. but I'm fairly sure their phones appear to perform slower than what they are capable of.

It's part of their philosophy of "under promise, and over deliver"

Apple are the cream of evil in my opinion. Sure all company's want your money, that is why they sell things, I have no problem with that. But Apple just take it too far.

>all corporations want to make money
>BUT THIS ONE CORPORATION CHARGES MORE THAT MUST MAKE THEM EVIL!

Wonderful logic there, champ.

Of course any company would do this. It's not just Apple. If a company knows that there's still a base of its users on older generations of tech, they'll do everything in their power to get them OFF of that tech and onto the new tech. Dickish, yes; but it's what they do.

It's true and every company does it, or else no one would buy new products!
Lightbulbs are (maybe a myth) designed to burn our soon, or people would only ever need one.

No, you seem to have come to the conclusion about my opinion from that one post. Notice I said "IN MY OPINION". That OPINION is what I have come up with after watching them rip every penny out of Mr and Mrs normal for my hole life. Really, $1000 for a laptop? They make that laptop for only $100 most likely, the extra they put on is just for the badge on the front. And have you seen the software they make? I have no problem with capitalist company's at all, but Apple take it TOO far.

Oh yes, because Apple is responsible for making everybody's wallet lighter at the end of the day. You're free to go to any other laptop brand and get the same hardware for cheaper prices.

You don't really know why they charge more for their products. It's not the sticker on the front, it's not the name brand: it's the fact that it uses an operating system that isn't licensed to anyone else. You know why Mac OS got so cheap in the mid-90s before Steve Jobs came back? It's because they began outsourcing to other companies who started making their own branches of the OS.

You also have to factor in supply and demand. Apple purposefully makes a certain number of their laptops/desktops/iProducts to meet initial demand, but no more. Just look at the demand for the new iPhone 5s. That alone is on a 2-3 week delay in shipping because of the demand. If you look at a manufacturer of a Windows-based PC, they make constant stock, whether demand meets it or not. Often times, this stock consists of low-end models to high-end models that range in different prices, the same as you find on Apple's website. However, since Microsoft was smart in the 80s and licensed its software out to other companies to use in making computers, it's much cheaper to buy a Windows PC than it is to buy an Apple PC.

Stop blaming Apple. There are plenty of other companies in a range of fields that take it "too far" when it comes to pricing, but it all comes down to the aspects of the field they are in. In Apple's case, I have given you various reasons above as to why they are more expensive than their Windows (and Linux, respectively) counterpart. So again, stop blaming Apple.

yeah, there is a jailbreak method that applies the optimization paths that the later phones get, despite what apple say, there is not as much difference in their new CPU's than they would like you to think, they just role out more and more un-optimized code for the older devices, then you can have you joy of buying a new one!
