View Full Version : How to enjoy metal?

I'm trying to expand my music collection and I was looking into metal. I'm not familiar with differentiating between different types of metal/punk yet, but the one my friend listens to is very fast paced, and is screaming constantly (thrash metal?), that I can't even understand a word they're saying. How do you "enjoy" that type of metal? Metal such as Drowning Pool is okay, I can understand the vocals, and the beats are slower. I guess that fast paced metal is in a sense, beautiful, because the complex polyrhythms, the tempo, and the skill to scream in a certain way.

That stuff is garbage as far as
I am concerned, like most everything
in music that came out after 2000.
I think that stuff has more to do with
following a trend more than anything else.

Metal music doesn't appeal to me...
...it's too high-pitched.
I listen to music to relax and not to get excited again...

my tolerance with metal often depends on my mood, it's such a varied range these days the best thing to do is search around the various sub genres in it and see if you find something you like

There's lots of genres of metal just keep experimenting. Thrash metal lyrics can be undecipherable and basically are just a wall of noise. The lyrics of Arch Enemy's songs (death metal) are quite clear and understandable, such as We Will Rise. If you're trying to ease yourself into it I'd suggest kind of rock-metal.

Some won't consider this metal but I'm gonna offer it anyways - Avenged Sevenfold. Their albums are always different. City of Evil and Hail to the King are two of the best for newbies like you. (pls don't be offended by that term lol)
There's always the roots of heavy metal like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, etc. Those are pretty good.

I find this question to be quite confusing to be honest. You enjoy metal the same way you would enjoy any music I'd imagine. I suppose the reason why I enjoy metal so much is it's diversity. Now a lot of people here some unclean vocals and just throw it into the same rabbit-hole they throw every band that has unclean vocals, because to them, it all sounds the same. Which is an ignorant statement to say the least, they don't hear anything different because they don't want to, they wish to remain ignorant. It's not like you start liking these metal bands because you learn what they're screaming, knowing the vocals isn't required for enjoyment. They're not singing these vocals, they're SCREAMING them at you which gives the illusion that the vocalists care a lot about what they're saying, which makes you care, in a way.

Even if you don't like unclean vocals, you might like TesseracT...

People do sound close minded. I do understand there's multiple sub-genres of metal, just like any other main genre of music. I just dont understand how SOME bands create music that's so complex, it sounds pretty much like white noise. Yes, those music compositions seem complicated, which makes them beautiful, but it sounds like fuzz (not all metal, just those specific ones). And thanks for the TesseracT! :)

Don't force yourself onto a type of music. If you start listening to a band and find them to be too heavy or not right for you even if it's in a genre of music you supposedly like, just don't listen to them. There are many sub genres of metal and a lot of rock/punk is classed as metal to those that are unaware of all the different kinds of music anyway.

I'm guessing the type of music you're talking about your friend listening to sounds a little like this?

You don't have to understand what they're saying to enjoy the music, I mean you can look up the lyrics which I'm sure many people do and you can kind of catch on. I love Thy Art Is Murder, especially when I'm in the zone and really into my artwork. It helps me concentrate if you can believe that :P You have different music for different events and people take to it differently. While I describe that song as being a breath of fresh air someone else might consider it to be a headache and not music at all (which is untrue of course xD).

I have to tell you a couple years ago I hated all metal and now I'm into some of the heaviest stuff. Even if you don't like it now don't disregard it completely because peoples tastes change.

The great thing about metal is that there's so many different types of it. Do you want super brutal, heavy, dark, scare-the-shit-out-of-your-family metal? Slaves Shall Serve by Behemoth
Do you want melodious, pleasant-sounding metal to sing along to? Shepherd of Fire by Avenged Sevenfold.
Do you want modern, young people, to jump around and mosh to? Children of Love by Crown the Empire or OG Loko by Of Mice & Men.
Do you want softer, barely metal, but super good Satanic 70's psychadelic rock/80's heavy metal? Year Zero by Ghost BC

I guess I can offer up how my music progressed. I went from symphonic and gothic metal to power metal and then I did a bit of extreme metal before my music taste went in a totally different direction. So in band names, I went Within Temptation, Nightwish, After Forever, Sonata Arctica, Cradle of Filth, with of course more bands in-between.

But I've listened to metal for five years and I can't stand metalcore, deathcore, and others so don't sweat it. Like it's been said, you don't like it, move on. Listen to what you like. I have enough experience forcing myself into listening a group of genres and it makes you pretty miserable.
