Microsoft has offered to buy the search engine company Yahoo for $44.6bn (£22.4bn) in cash and shares.
The offer, contained in a letter to Yahoo's board, is 62% above Yahoo's closing share price on Thursday.
Yahoo cut its revenue forecasts earlier this week and said it would have to spend an additional $300m this year trying to revive the company.
It has been struggling in recent years to compete with Google, which has also been a competitor to Microsoft.

Microsoft really has an interest in it. This is isn't the first time they have tried to buy it. Like before they have had talks to merge etc., so I think eventually Microsoft will get what it wants.

I don't see how they could make yahoo better than google, the only service they'd benifit from is the email?

Same I don't think they could compete with google. but I think Microsoft will end up buying because they want it so much.

Google is top and always will be unless they start tinkering with new stuff eg. starting service charges for mail etc. (like a gold service)

Google have about 50% of the market share of searchs. Personally I really like Yahoo! but think about it. Yahoo! is a massive brand name, no matter if you like it or not and so is Microsoft. Combine two of the biggest brands in the market and Google could have a problem.
