Police said they believed the youth was attacked by another pupil at Allerton Grange High in the north of the city at about 0930 GMT.
He is now in a stable condition in the Leeds General Infirmary. West Yorkshire Police said a 13-year-old boy had been arrested.
Parts of the school have been cordoned off. Detectives said the stabbing was not being treated as a racial attack.
Richard Morris, chairman of governors at Allerton Grange, released a statement through the city's Education department which said: "We cannot comment on this morning's incident as it is a matter for the police.
"The school is calm, lessons are proceeding as normal and we can reassure families that it is a safe environment for their children."
Mr Morris said police were at the site.
"Our thoughts and hopes are focused on the young person in hospital."
The school's website says it has 1,690 students on the roll, with 258 in the sixth form.
The site's front page said pupils were from both inner city and suburban areas.

It's terrible what can happen at a school, which is supposed to be a safe place. I hope the kid recovers and his attacker gets what's coming to him. What a way to throw your life away.

Yeah...this sounds a bit too over-reacting of me but in usa schools a lot of them have x-ray machines and metal detectors to stop this sorta thing happening. maybe UK schools should invest more in it because look at this,

Actually not too many schools here really do have x-ray machines, I think that's mostly in the high crime areas, and near Columbine and VA Tech where people are still a little shaky and unsure about their safety. Where I live, and most of the places I've been, metal detectors are way off in the future. Very few schools really have those, but I think more should. It shouldn't be this crazy high-security issue, but by having metal detectors at the entrances that the kids have to walk through in order to get in, might be a good idea in more of the areas with high gang activity and high crime rates. The only thing is, it'd take time, you can' have a million kids going through them at once, you'd have to do it pretty much single file; even with multiple detectors that's still a long line. A lot of people would protest that.

i sometimes wonder what makes someone do this to someone else, especially in a school.

Who knows, Stephen. My boyfriend was a victim of a similar assault a few years back. A kid found a big piece of scrap metal just on the side of the road or something, and he thought it'd be funny to hit someone with it. The next person he saw happened to be Christy. He was in a coma for three weeks, and the kid who did it to him has been in Juvi ever since. He says it was just random "fun", he just felt like doing it. Some people are just messed up.

They should be an officer at the gates tommorow probably hanging around the school to see if anything kicks off again.

Breathe, Gavin, make sure you breathe. I'm sure your dad will understand if you're too worried about your friend to have too much fun at dinner, parents are good with that sort of thing, so let's not worry about that now. Do you know how your friend is doing? Can you maybe visit him today or tomorrow? Being able to see him might help you to calm down a bit, and I'm sure he'd be happy to see you too. Just try to hang in there. He'll get better, and things will be ok. If it helps to talk about it, I'm sure we'd all like to know how your friend is doing down the road. Be strong, you can handle this.
