The whole convict argument isn't really a joke, as a cricket fan I pretty much know that anyone out their either is a convict or a prison officer.

Australia has major problems, they've got a water crisis, they can't use half their country, they're having dust storms which cripple their economy, they've got a labour crisis and a single fire can rip through their country so yeah they're not as great as everyone likes to think- just like dubai

^That.

And Abbott is also their PM. That man's a serious tool.

I mean the argument that they're all descendants of criminals sent from London, obviously many are but I visit Australia often and they are always so walk and welcoming! also the country has beauty that I have seen no where eels, with Sydney and Perth especially oh and Melbourne:D

well it is a beautiful country when it is not burning:P oh and btw the UK has the second highest crime rate in the world so we can hardly talk

I hear Iraq has great natural beauty- doesn't make the country any better.

It doesn't matter about the UK, it doesn't make Australia any better or worse. And occurding to the UN police and crime report it's not even in the top 10. But yeah that doesn't matter when assessing Australia that's just a strawman,

Abbott is a fool- he's swindled money from the Australian state and he refuses to give his citizens equal rights.

Why what's wrong with him?

It was an Australian citizen who enlightened me to all this (the quotes are largely taken from a PM he sent me as to prove his point). I thought Electing a Liberal was good - shows how much I knew about Australian politics; I've since rectified that. Tony Abbott is, simply put, a homophobic, sexist, self-righteous, pseudo-intellectual, xenophobic bully who has no place in any political system, least of all at its head. Here's some quotes:

On Homosexuality and LGBT Rights:
(thoughts on Homosexuality) "I’d probably … I feel a bit threatened"
(Concerning the Catholic congregation) "If you’d asked me for advice I would have said to have – adopt a sort of 'don’t ask, don’t tell' policy about all of these things…"
"Same sex marriage? I'm not someone who wants to see radical change based on the fashion of the moment."

On Abortion:
"The problem with the Australian practice of abortion is that an objectively grave matter has been reduced to a question of the mother’s convenience."
"Abortion is the easy way out. It's hardly surprising that people should choose the most convenient exit from awkward situations."

On Woman:
"What the housewives of Australia need to understand as they do the ironing is that if they get it done commercially it’s going to go up in price and their own power bills when they switch the iron on are going to go up, every year…"
(I'd interpret this as support for martial rape) "I think there does need to be give and take on both sides, and this idea that sex is kind of a woman’s right to absolutely withhold, just as the idea that sex is a man’s right to demand I think they are both they both need to be moderated, so to speak"

Climate Change:
"Climate change is absolute crap."

On Immigration; Aboriginals; British nationalism; and general Xenophobia and idiocy :
"Now, I know that there are some Aboriginal people who aren’t happy with Australia Day. For them it remains Invasion Day. I think a better view is the view of Noel Pearson, who has said that Aboriginal people have much to celebrate in this country’s British Heritage"
"There may not be a great job for indigenous people, but whatever it is they just have to do it - and if it's picking up rubbish around the community, it just has to be done."
"Jesus knew that there was a place for everything and it’s not necessarily everyone’s place to come to Australia."
"Racism used to be offered as the complete explanation for Aboriginal poverty, alienation and early death. Racism hasn’t disappeared. Still, if racism caused poverty, why hasn’t poverty declined as racism diminished."

There's more; but I won't go looking for it now. He's rather famous for declaring that 'shit happens' on camera when informed of an Australian soldiers death, too. His economic policies don't seem that great either; but I don't know enough about them to bash.

Hitler was elected. Bush was elected twice. I could go on but it's much easier just to say that people are largely idiots; people make up the electorate.

Once again it doesn't matter what's happening in Russia, this is about australia and they're refusal to give all citizens equal rights. I also like how you ignored it by saying you don't know it well enough.

Nobody will like him? This is politics not the playground. Hitler was elected using rather aggressive anti- jewish propaganda, the BNP have a seat on the EU parliment. Just because someone was voted in doesn't mean they're fit for public office. All the quotes provided above are correct so your currently supporting an anti gay, pro rape PM of Australia well done!

the only thing I have herd of him is that he won because labor failed, a surprise victory for him oh and in Australia the party is spelled labor because of the American influence;)

I love Australia, not the politics, I love the beaches cities and the people, not the PM

I guess I don't like him if what your saying is true, quite the same really it is my favorite country:'(

I'm sure you'll love the water shortages, the wild fires and the fact that they're destroying their tourist attraction by milking it to it's death. The country has problems, major problems.

Nay because o-zone layer, I wouldn't live there because I absolutely hate hot weather (and most big Australian cities are quite hot) and because the chances of getting skin cancer are high. I do think people there are happy and nice, but for me as a personal preference I wouldn't live there.

Convict argument? Wat?

Gumleaf
October 23rd, 2013, 04:51 AM
Thanks for enlightening me about what's wrong with my country.

My opinions are:

- We are all convicts, or come from convicts? Well given how multi-cultural this country is now, I think that is a very naïve comment. Besides, of those who do have 'convict' heritage, doesn't mean everyone now are convicts.

- The water crisis? The vast majority of major cities have a healthy supply of water, especially Sydney and Brisbane with dams that are very healthy.

- Yes, wildfires can burn out places very quickly. But at least we aren't freezing our butts off all the time like other places.

- Finally for the Prime Minister... He was elected to get the economy back on track and to get us out of debt. He wasn't elected for his support on social issues such as homosexual marriage. He is a conservative, and everyone knows that and knew that before voting him in. The comment that he was voted in because of the failure of the Labor party is also partly true in my opinion, yes. I can fully understand how progressive minded people would find him frustrating and so on, and no doubt he has said some stupid things in his time. But he should be judged I think by his performance as PM and not on his views.

The bottom line is, if you don't like our country, then don't come here. Simple as that! Your loss is my gain, because there is no other place i'd rather be. :)

I've always thought Australia was a really pretty place, and I would love to visit one day. I don't think I'd want to live there though. I hear their PM is big old bag of dicks.

I say neutral because I don't know about it enough. However, after reading Vlerchan's post on the quotes from its PM, I'm not sure I like the country's PM much. Especially the one on women (at least the support for martial rape). Seriously, a man's right to demand? >_> Oh, and also on homosexuality and abortion......

Just because he's been elected doesn't mean he's "not that bad". That's a ridiculous notion

However all countries has its faults, it's not just Australia. Some people will love it, others won't.

No- his comments about rape make him unpopular.

The electorate can be stupid at times- see George W Bush or in fact have a look at that German dictator back in 1930's I believe he was elected so he must be good. Your logic and argument is flawed- simple as

Hitler was wanted in Germany then, do you think a evil man who apparently done everything wrong is wanted? no. so he wouldnt get elected

So by that logic Hitler wasn't evil? We're debating a concept because you think that an election equals job perfection. You then retreat to the concept that you don't know anything about him. This a PM who supports martial rape

I don't think any of the quotes I posted could possibly sound good in any context - particularity the martial rape, blatant misogyny, and homophobia - though I'm wondering why you're still bothering to defend Abbott; you know nothing about him or his views - you've said that much yourself.
