Former president of the Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) Josip Broz Tito’s widow Jovanka Broz died in Belgrade on Sunday aged 89.
She died at the casualty ward of the Belgrade Clinical Centre, where she was admitted in a very serious condition on August 23.
Broz was born in the village of Pecane, near Korenica, Croatia. Her maiden name was Budisavljevic.
The widow of Tito, who was president for life of the SFRY, joined the Yugoslav communists when she was 17.
She fought in the war to liberate Yugoslavia from Nazi occupation from its start in 1941. Broz won two medals for courage, became a major of the Yugoslav Army and also received a medal given out to all those who fought in the liberation war from its start. She met Tito during the German assault on Drvar in 1944 and the two were married in 1952.

Their relationship at the time caused speculations as to her potential political ambitions. Tito and Jovanka were last seen together in public in June 1977.
During Tito’s illness, as he lay in hospital, Jovanka visited him and later, at the funeral, she was at her appointed spot, but soon after she was ordered to move out of the residence she and Tito had lived in. She was allowed to bring her personal belongings with her, but not jewelry and other valuables.
She was without personal identification papers, like an ID card and passport, for a long time, which was finally resolved in summer 2009 thanks to efforts by Rasim Ljajic and Ivica Dacic.
She lived in complete seclusion, far away from public eyes, and would only appear at anniversaries of Tito’s death.
