Hey guys and girl,
Firstly I was wondering if you have heard of the Community and Family Studies Independent Research Project before? If not I’ll briefly explain.
The Community and Family Studies (CAFS) Independent Research Project (IRP) is basically a research project on whichever topic you wish. Anonymous questionnaires are completed and data is compiled and presented. Then shredded after marking.
As the project can be based on a topic of ones choice I have chosen self harm in people aged 13-19 and its affects.
Don’t freak and be all like “she has no idea what she is going on about”, “she doesn’t understand”.
Trust me. I do. I myself have been self harming for 4 years (cutting and burning) and will involve my own answers to the questionnaire anonymously.
So basically, I was wondering if you wonderful people would help me out with this?

The project is due in four weeks so id need answers asap please!!!
The answers can be detailed or not, and you don’t have to answer all. If you are uncomfortable just put a “X“ next to the question.
Feel free to pass this on to others to complete.
I love you all x
p.s. all answers will be shredded after I gather all the data 

9. Isolation, depression, self-loathing, feelings of being alone, unwanted, unloved.
10. Rubbing a key on my forearm, hard and repeatedly. Sometimes for several minutes at a time.
11. Yes. It varies, and once a week, sometimes less or more.
12. Until I'm alone. Preferably at home, in my room at night where I don't have to worry about anyone else seeing.
13. Anxious. Upset. Angry. Frustrated.
14. Empty, sort of, but in a good way. I'm not worrying, or fretting, or thinking at all. I just concentrate on that pain.
15. At first, I feel...satisfied. And tired, so tired of all of this. And then it starts swelling and aching, and I'm disappointed in myself. But as long as it aches like that, I'm okay. I can survive for few more days.
16. Yes. By being around people, so I can't; by snapping a rubber band on my wrist. By writing, or drawing, or leaving my keys downstairs when I go to bed. They don't work. They just hold it off for a little longer.
17. Yes. I suppose just having a bad day, or week, or arguing again with my dad again, and everything bad just coalesces.
18. Because sometimes I feel like I deserve it. And because it helps me, somehow, to pull through.
19. Right forearm, four to nine inches above the elbow. (I'm left-handed.)
20. I hate them. They remind me of my weakness, and broadcast to others my weakness, my dependency on this. I feel safer, hidden, in my jackets.
21. Yes.

23. No.
24. No.
25. I think it does both.
26. It helps me go on, but when my mom sees them, I feel terrible. What makes me feel worse is that her disappointment doesn't make me feel bad enough to stop.
27. Yes
28. My mom, five of my closest friends, when summer came, and I decided I'd just let them show.
29. Disappointment. Sadness. They wanted me to stop, but didn't shut me out or condemn me because of it.
30. Yes
31. Sort of neither. We help each other when we're close to cutting, but we don't comdemn each other when we do.

40. Yes.
41. My father's trust, whatever tiny remnants of it that were left. And many others'. People look at me differently. Most don't comment on them, but they treat me differently, and look at me differently.
42. Yes. I'm very self-conscious, and I hate how people treat me because they see the scars, or know about them. They make me want to stop, but at the same time, the added pressure of their reactions only make me want to cotninue, if that makes sense.

I think more people would reply if you allowed them to private-message you, or contact you privately. Not many people are comfortable with laying out their deepest secrets, their greatest weaknesses, out for anyone else to see. Even if it is among people similar to them.

5. Have you ever self injured?
Yes

6. do you currently self injure?
No
7. if not, how long have you not been self injuring for?
about 3 months or just over i think

8. How old were you when you started self injuring? was there a specific reason?
About 2011/2012 i can't really remember. Yes.
9. if so, what?
My mum and sister had been fighting for months about the stupidest things, the arguments changed everyday, and it finally got too much.

10. what method do you self injure by? (eg. Cutting, burning, etc.)
mostly cutting, but i do pull my hair, scratch and bite though I never used to count htem as SH until aftere I started cutting and reallised that they were frms of SH too.
11. Do you have urges to self injure? If so, how severe and how often?
Yes when I do SH, they vary between being a sort of longing to just feel the emotional release and calm anad severe which is generally when my emotions have been bottled up for too long an something triggers them

12. when having urges, how long does it take for you to act on these?
DEpends on whether or not I'm around peope, and who they are. As i said before i sometimes scratch or bite so alot of people just think my eczema is playing up, which is an exscuse i'll often use
13. How do you normally feel before self injury?
if i don;t have the strong urges or am not htinking about it or feeling overly stressed, then i am usually fine, but if i can feel that i am gettign close to SH them i t3end to feel agitated or really restless, especially when i was atschool and in class.
14. How do you normally feel during self injury?
calm annd at peace, generally just befoe i cut my heart is beating really fast because i'm so aggitated, but as soon as i cut i can feel my heart nstantly calm down.
15. How do you normally feel after self injury?
better, then after a while I'll probably feel guilty or hate my self for what i've done. Ohtere times i feel more in control which was mainly when things were going worse in my life and SH was my 'best' form of release.
16. Do you ever try to stop yourself from self injuring? If so, how?
yes, diistracting myself by reading, drawing, watching tV or a movie, cuddling the cat, comming here, exercising, etc.
17. Do you have major triggers? If so, what are they?
yes as bad as it sounds my family members. Sonce my parents are divirced they use me as a sounding board for their frustrations and they expect me to be the good little daughter and to do as i'm told.
18. Why do you self injure now (eg. Addiction)
it generally starts off as a release mechanism but tends to turn towards an addiction, which i only ever realise when i try and stop.
19. Where on your body do you self injure most commonly?
i try to limit myself to my left forearm so that i make a deala with myself if there is no more room i can't cut. I have only ever cut above that once. I also want to be abalt ot control how i cancovr up my scars so i try not to cut hwere i won;t be bale to if its too hot or somehting. by cuttign on my lowerr arm i can coer it with bracelets or hairlackies.
20. How do you feel about scars?
i don;t really care about my scrs anymore they have almost completely faded by now and I don't really care if anybody who i don;t no ees them as they don;t no me, bu ti try to hide them from my parents and family as i no they would dissaporve and not understand. I have this belef that if you can;t understnad my problems that led me to cut or atleast be simpathetic htn you have no right to know if the scars are SH, i also believe thaat societ shuodn't pressure us to feel bad, becuse really they are a reminder of what we have overcome
21. Do you have suicidal thought?
no but i have in the past
22. If so, how often?
N/A
23. Have you ever attempted suicide?
once didn;t suceed in any shaope or form i was to scared to cut my skin enough to kill myself although i did wan't to die. This happened when i was first starting cutting so if it had pappened a few months later i probably would have followed through.
24. Would you say that your self injury is suicide related?
no
25. Do you personally believe that self injury helps you or make you worse?
both
26. How does it do this?
i think it helps immediatly during nd after but if you try to talk about it to osmeone close or ttry and get help the stereotypes and stigmas surrounding SH can cause a lot of probems and hessitation to recieve help.
27. Have you opened up to or “come out” about your self injury to anyone?
yep
28. If so, who?
4 people (possibly another 2 know but never really talked about it to my face). first was my supposed best friend, then was t2 of my closest friends one i still talk to about it if it gets too much the otherr i may do but we are still good enough friends that it doesnt matter if i can't go to him to talk about it. The 4th person is the most helpful to me she is my absolute Best Friend.
29. What was their reaction to this?
as i said before te first girl acted all carign promising hte next day to talk to me and help me out if i needed it but hte next day just completly ignored it and didn;t care. the two guys one accidentallyl said right next ot a teacher but why would you cut that stupid i just laughed and said its not like i did it on purpose and that my plastic flder fell when i was getting it out my bag and htt how i got hte cratches on my arm, the other guy just luaghed at the first guy expressiion coz he had a dear in the headlights lookon his face. he appoligized immediatly after the teacher walked off saying he didn't mesan to say it so loud. and my best friend at first asked if htey were cats scratches coz another friend was with us and i agreed knowing she didn't beleive me but that i coculd talk to her later which i did and she told me to talk to her anytime as she would gladly listen to me and help.
30. Do you know anyone else who self injure?
yes
31. Do they encourage or discourage you from self injuring?
really they just tell me that i can talk to htem if i ever need to they don;t condemn me or enourage they just accept that it is what it is
32. Is seeing their scars/self injuries triggering for you?
no
33. Have you ever been hospitalised as a result of self harm?
no
34. Have you ever been treated by a health care professional as a result of your self injury?
no
35. If yes.

a) How did they act towards you?
b) Were you satisfied with your treatment
c) What were their attitudes towards self harm

36. Have you ever been diagnosed with any mental illness?
no unles ADHD counts but i have had it all my life and os don;t reallly notice it until the urges get to strrong, hten i get pretty impulsive
37. Do you see a professional regularly about your self injury?
no
38. If so, who? ( please don’t include names. Just state wheater a psychologist, doctor, counsellor)

39. Are you currently on any medication fin regards to your self injury/
no
40. Have you lost friends over self injury?
no but almost luckily her mum found her before it was too late, thankfully she s still alve and healthier.
41. What have been some other consequences of your self injury?
feeling like i have to hide my scars as i feel poeple on't understand or will judge me for something they can't understand.
42. Have any of the consequences you’ve experienced made you want to continue or discontinue self injury?
yes sometimes when i feel really isolated and like poeple just don't understand what exactly i'm going through despite me explaining it to them, they just seemed to think i was overreacting and just getting all emotional.

40. Have you lost friends over self injury? No but I've been picked on more by people that don't know I self injure but assume so because of the music I listen to and make cruel, disgusting jokes about it.

41. What have been some other consequences of your self injury? There having been any really other than my parents finding out and checking up on me more at the beginning and getting blood everywhere.

42. Have any of the consequences you’ve experienced made you want to continue or discontinue self injury? They don't particularly make me want to discontinue since it helps me a lot but I wouldn't like for my parents to find out that I still self harm.

Lyrics:
"I kiss the scars on her skin, I still think you're beautiful and I don't ever want to lose my bestfriend"
- A Match Into Water by Pierce The Veil

"Cause they don't even know you, all they see is scars
They don't see the angel living in your heart
Let them find the real you burried deep within
Let them know with all you've got, that you are not your skin"
- Skin by Sixx:A.M.

"I tear my heart open, I sew myself shut
My weakness is that I care too much
And my scars remind me that the past is real
I tear my heart open just to feel"

I feel Bad... I had a friend that always did this kind of stuff, she did things like cut and those, and then she put a rope on her neck and almost died... the worst part was that her little 8 years old brother saw her when we was right about to die and he call her parents...
GOSH I HATE THIS....
She now has a little baby, and she doesn't cut anymore, but it kills me to know that you all do this..i wish i could live closer to you all and be a good friend, to support you all the time...

5. Have you ever self injured?
Yes.

6. Do you currently self injure?
7. If not, how long have you not been self injuring for?
Not really, but I'm very close to a relapse. I've been snapping elastic bands, scratching myself and the like to keep myself from actually harming myself, but not enough for it to count. Been since december I believe.

8. How old were you when you started self injuring? was there a specific reason?
9. If so, what?
I think that I had just turned twelve. Had been feeling depressed all my life. I know that there's a part in my diary from when I were seven or eight where I wrote some detailed suicidal stuff. However there had been bullying, abuse, etc in my life. First time it was just that I felt an extreme urge to feel pain or something so I got some scissors out, hadn't even heard of self-harm at the time.

10. What method do you self injure by? (eg. Cutting, burning, etc.)
Mainly cutting. Sometimes burning. If I don't have anything to hurt myself with I can hit myself or hit stuff, but I don't really count it since it's never anything serious and I don't even know that I'm doing it sometimes.

11. Do you have urges to self injure? If so, how severe and how often?
Yes. I've come to the point where I'm mostly at an alright mood. Then there's periods where everything comes crashing down and I don't know what to do with myself. Up and down a lot, so during the "fine times" I can think about it sometimes but not anything especially serious. When I am at a low though, which I am at the moment, I usually think of it more than a lot. Becomes very severe too.

12. When having urges, how long does it take for you to act on these?
Depends. Probably longer if I haven't done it in a long time just trying to keep it up, otherwise it's pretty much whatever.

13. How do you normally feel before self injury?
There isn't words.

14. How do you normally feel during self injury?
Relieved but still mixed feelings.

15. How do you normally feel after self injury?
Good because it's a relief, but bad since I know I shouldn't and that it doesn't actually make anything any better.

16. Do you ever try to stop yourself from self injuring? If so, how?
When I haven't done it for a while. Keeping busy constantly, being around my family, or doing stuff like snapping my wrists with rubber bands.

17. Do you have major triggers? If so, what are they?
Not really.

18. Why do you self injure now (eg. Addiction)
Because everything is shit when I do it. Reason why it's self harm is probably because I'm still a bit addicted and it's what my brain is used to doing when I'm at my worst or something, so it always falls back to it.

19. Where on your body do you self injure most commonly?
Wrist or thigh I guess, but any place possible will do.

20. How do you feel about scars?
I don't really care about them a lot anymore. It can be a bit uncomfortable when I'm around new people or people that I like but don't really know. Stuff like that, just don't want to scare people away or have them wonder about it the first time I meet them. Won't wear longsleeved shirts etc for the sake of covering them up, I have them visible a lot.

21. Do you have suicidal thought?
When I'm at a low, yes.

22. If so, how often?
As I said, when it get's bad. When it is it can be constantly or several times a day.

23. Have you ever attempted suicide?
Meh.

24. Would you say that your self injury is suicide related?
Not now I guess. Depending on what you mean.

25. Do you personally believe that self injury helps you or make you worse?
It helps me for the time being, and can snap me out of feeling extremely low. Doesn't make it better for real though.

26. How does it do this?
-

27. Have you opened up to or “come out” about your self injury to anyone?
I haven't been the one to actually tell anyone, but a lot of people have found out one way or another. And I have talked to teachers, psychiatrists, etc so well..

28. If so, who?
-

29. What was their reaction to this?
At first my old class found out because of a slipping hoodie sleeve. One of them asked me straight up about it and wondered why and stuff but well.. She didn't really have a major reaction. Then she and another person told a teacher who really helped me through a lot throughout the years. When my parents found out they got quite mad I believe but then we never really spoke a lot of it unless it was with doctors and stuff.

30. Do you know anyone else who self injure?
I know that a friend of mine did it for a short period of time. Then I know a person who lives far far away but is one of my best friends who does it pretty severely. So well..

31. Do they encourage or discourage you from self injuring?
Discourage.

32. Is seeing their scars/self injuries triggering for you?
No.

33. Have you ever been hospitalised as a result of self harm?
Yes. I was put in a psychiatric ward because of self harm and high suicide risk.

34. Have you ever been treated by a health care professional as a result of your self injury?
Yes.

35. If yes.
a) How did they act towards you?
b) Were you satisfied with your treatment
c) What were their attitudes towards self harm
They didn't exactly act in any special way I guess, not to me or the fact that I self-harmed. I had to get stitches, so they gave me the injection so that I wouldn't feel it before they realized it was too old to get stitched and taped it instead. Was a bit irritated at them at first since that's the only type of injections that ever hurt for me, but it doesn't really bother me anymore.

36. Have you ever been diagnosed with any mental illness?
Severe depression.

37. Do you see a professional regularly about your self injury?
I used to. When I was at my worst I believe it was three times a week. Plus talking to two of my teachers quite a lot, who frankly probably helped me more than the professionals.

38. If so, who? ( please don’t include names. Just state wheater a psychologist, doctor, counsellor)
Psychologist, psych doctor, occasionally the school counsellor.

39. Are you currently on any medication fin regards to your self injury?
No. I was on Sertraline for one and a half year or something for the depression though.

40. Have you lost friends over self injury?
No.

41. What have been some other consequences of your self injury?
-

42. Have any of the consequences you’ve experienced made you want to continue or discontinue self injury?

1. Age --18

2. Gender --Male, but I want a sex change

3. Country -- Canada

4. State -- (Province) Ontario

5. Have you ever self injured? -- Yes

6. do you currently self injure? -- No

7. if not, how long have you not been self injuring for? -- 8 months or 18 months, depending on how you want to look at it. I stopped like obsessively self harming 18 months ago, but I cut on a few isolated occasions since, but I don't really think of those as relapses.

8. How old were you when you started self injuring? was there a specific reason? -- umm, I was 15, I think.

9. if so, what? -- I'm sure any reason I give would be wrong. People tend to think that they have explanations for mental stuff they do, but those explanations are usually 100% incorrect.

10. what method do you self injure by? (eg. Cutting, burning, etc.) --Cutting, scratching, and, if we want to count this, punching myself.

11. Do you have urges to self injure? If so, how severe and how often? -- I haven't really had a like urge per se, but I occasionally think that it would be nice.

12. when having urges, how long does it take for you to act on these? -- n/a

13. How do you normally feel before self injury? -- pretty awful

14. How do you normally feel during self injury? -- It feels like powerful and stuff.

17. Do you have major triggers? If so, what are they? -- I don't think so.

18. Why do you self injure now (eg. Addiction) -- I don't.

19. Where on your body do you self injure most commonly? -- Upper arm, because it was easy to get at, and easy to conceal; thigh, lower part of the leg (also for concealment). I tried to do my stomach, but I found it difficult.

20. How do you feel about scars? -- Wish they were more prominent.

21. Do you have suicidal thought? -- Yes.

22. If so, how often? -- At least daily.

23. Have you ever attempted suicide? -- Depending on your definition of "attempted", yes or no. Probably not.

24. Would you say that your self injury is suicide related? -- Yes and no.

25. Do you personally believe that self injury helps you or make you worse? -- I think most people who self harm probably would say that it does both. It gives you an outlet which you are otherwise lacking, but it contributes to your need for that outlet in the first place. In the broader pictures, it makes you worse.

26. How does it do this? -- I sort of just answered that, but it ultimately contributes to your overall feelings of negativity

27. Have you opened up to or “come out” about your self injury to anyone? -- Once

28. If so, who? -- A friend of mine

29. What was their reaction to this? -- They didn't take it to well, and ended up telling other people, and my self harming + some other stuff led to their not talking to me (for a while).

30. Do you know anyone else who self injure? -- I suspect someone I know closely has in the past, and I know some other people who probably have, but none of them have like told me that they have.

31. Do they encourage or discourage you from self injuring? -- Haven't talked about it.

32. Is seeing their scars/self injuries triggering for you? -- Haven't seen their scars.

33. Have you ever been hospitalised as a result of self harm? -- No

34. Have you ever been treated by a health care professional as a result of your self injury? -- No

35. If yes. --n/a
