View Full Version : Leather or Cloth Seating?

The car I'm getting is final. it's going to be a 2005 Chevrolet Impala for up to 5 grand. There are a lot of them around here, so I have a bunch of options. One that stuck out was Leather seats or cloth seats. There is no price change because there are different sellers for each car.
At first, this was a no-brainer for me. When I think of leather, I think of like Bentley and Rolls Royce. In reality, there is shitty leather and there is nice leather. leather seats are made out to be super nice and luxurious I think.
I was talking with my mom, and she said that the leather will be worn out and not good at all. She also said that it won't be comfortable because skin likes to stick to leather. She said that overall, cloth is a better option.
Does that sound right to you guys? I want to hear your opinion on leather seating if you have it in your car or if you have a lot of experience sitting in it. I'm really not interested in your opinion if you have some super expensive BMW or Mercedes because it's a lot different quality wise. Sorry about the messiness of this thread. I'm just not that focused right now.

Leather seats are cold in the winter unless you have heated seats and get sticky in the summer. I'd go with cloth.

I personally find leather more comfortable.

I've spent a lot of time in cars with both and I personally like leather better. Yeah, it can get a bit warm in the summer, but (in my opinion) it looks better and it's easier to clean.

For me, it depends on the current condition of the seat and the climate. Where I live, I wouldn't mind buying an ol' BMW with leather seats because BMW has pretty good leather and the temperature around here never really gets any higher than 95 degrees (F).
Now if I lived in a place like the desert or central valley (where the temp outside can get higher than 102), I'd rather stick to a cloth seat because they don't "reflect" heat like leather does.

With leather when it gets cold that leather is like ice. You better pray it has seat warmers

if it is real leather and not vinyl that looks like leather I'd go with the leather. they are a lot cooler to sit on in the summer then vinyl and easier to keep clean then cloth.

Since it is a used car, I would choose the one with the nicer interior regardless of leather or cloth. If it is a leather interior car and is in acceptable condition, get it. Leather or vinyl is much easier to clean and it has a much less chance of showing stains. I spilled a coffee on one of our old cars with cloth seats and it stained. I spilled something else in our Escalade and it wiped up completely without leaving a stain. We have a Mercedes E class, Escalade, and Porsche 911 all with heated and cooled seats so we don't really have to worry about it being too hot or cold. As for an older model Impala, it is most likely vinyl. I mean even a $60,000 suburban LTZ doesn't even have real leather! ---Just get the "leather" one. Most likely, the one with leather has better rims and usually the upper trim levels have more modern conveniences! : )
P.S. oh by they way, maybe the dealer would work in a deal to give you sport cloth seats, leather on the shoulder areas and cloth where your back is. That will decrease the too hot/cold effect of leather seats and still have that luxury feel! Just a though

I say leather, cause leather is awesome and classy, just make sure the leather is not fake.

I Love Leather seats black. They do get cold in the winter that's why its nice if you have heated

If they're in good condition, get the leather seats. If not, get the cloth ones.
Leather is easier to clean and in most cases more comfortable. GM tends to put pretty good leather in their vehicles, at least a lot better than the "leatherette" found in new VWs and Audis.

Don't listen to them thats why you wear long pants in winter to avoid being a cold and you also get heat. In summer you buy special cloths for you car model to avoid that leather stickiness. And Leather always looks cooler. (my car is leather)

Leather is better. You don't have to worry about the seats being hot since you're a guy (unless you wear short shorts)

When you think of leather seats, you think of Bentley and Rolls Royce. When I think of leather I think of durability and easy to clean. For a car that is 8 years old I think the best thing to do is get something that was able to have those 8 years of filth and grossness off the seat. Leather seats are better at repelling unwanted liquids and cloth absorb those unwanted liquids. --For that reason, cloth is really dingy and unsanitary. If the leather seats are in good condition, get leather or look for another with leather seats that are in better condition.

Your mom is pretty right about leather, but they are also a lot easier to clean. I am very sensitive to textures and I usually like leather more, but that's more personal.

being vegan and totally biased, i'd prefer a car with pleather interior. cloth is too dull for me and pleather is a lot easier to clean.

It really depends on what you like. To me, I would MUCH rather have leather. Yes, it is cold in the winter, and yes they get hot in the summer. When it comes to sticking to the seats, guys usually have less of an issue with that...unless they shave their legs.
Leather is usually associated with a high end car, so it can make the car look and feel nicer to others if that matters to you at all. Also, being young, when you have friends in the car and they spill something (it will happen, it will suck) it is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY easier to clean spilled _____ off of a leather seat. Cloth stains easily, leather not so much. Really it's a lot about what you like, after all it is your car!

For me, I wouldn't go out to buy a car with leather seats because I live in Australia :P and also you would have to take care of them.

I say leather. Even though the seats get cold, if you spill something on it, you can clean it easily. If it's cloth you are DONE.

My dad owns a retired police car, and the seats in the back are leather. I absolutely hate them. They are uncomfortable and sticky and overall nasty. The truck, on the other hand has kind of a plastic covered, bench seat. I think it is as nice or nicer than cloth.
