View Full Version : I'm just curious -- don't bite off my head here.

And when I say that I especially mean to the backseat (not actual moderators) moderators that jump in these threads with their two cents on why the forum is run a certain way. This may have been suggested before -- I saw a thread about donations, but didn't bother reading it. I was curious if there was a possibility for paid subscriptions for extra perks? Of course that doesn't mean strip regular members of anything as that'd be cruel and unusual punishment. But perks like can add to send a PM to more than the regular amount, allow editing of the weird little self-title thing above our av, (i know there isn't all the space in the world on here, so this might very well be a definite no as a prospective perk) paid members get a tiny bit bigger avatar or that sort of thing.
Now don't get me wrong, these perks would be nice. I'm not bringing this up for the extra goodies because I rarely pm one person and can honestly say I'd never PM multiple above, like, 2; I like my title the way it is as I think it's fairly appropriate given the context of some of my posts; I also enjoy the size of my av as it is. Size doesn't matter to me...;) Okay, enough being creepy. What I'm getting at is I'd like to donate and I think others would as well if you bait them with little perks. I know this place costs a pretty penny to run, not taking into consideration the cost of the chatroom. The subscriptions could just be fairly reasonable -- 10 or so dollars for so many months. I don't know, just thinking aloud here. This place has helped me a lot and I'd just like to give back.

I'm going to jump in as a former mod and give my two cents.
I don't like the idea of a donation that gives you something extra- that defeats the whole point of a donation doesn't it. If you want the lovely little title above your name you have to get 2500 posts and not be a current mod.
I wouldn't want it to turn into case of people who are able to pay having more because that's just plain unfair. It would also be a pain to actually have a payment based system, I mean personally I wouldn't want to hook my debit card up to an online forum and it would cause problems if something went wrong.
I know you want to give back to the site, heck we all owe this site a lot but I just don't think that paying would solve that

The problem with donations is that this site is frequented almost exclusively by people who are under 18/21/any other legal age. Accepting money from minors can bring a whole host of problems with it. Say for example someone really likes the site, they have a Paypal account, and want to donate, say, $10. Nothing wrong with that; kids can have a Paypal account and theoretically do what they want with it.
Now say a parent or guardian is looking over their purchase history and they see this $10 donation going to the owner of VT. They know nothing about the site and approach the person who donated…and I think you can guess how things go from there.
That's just one reason, and I'm sure there are plenty more. Donations, at this point at least, aren't really feasible in my opinion. I think your system would work if this wasn't a site full of minors, but it is, so #my2cents

This pretty much sums it up:
ImCoolBeans and myself are not accepting donations, for a number of reasons; the main being that it gets kinda dodgy and weird accepting all these donations from minors.
And:
I don't want any angry parents suing me for taking money from their 14 year old kids :P

I'm sorry if I came off like a prick. :P I wasn't meaning to at all, honestly. And I also realize the I worded it made it sound as though those who aren't mods or have never been have no knowledge on the subject. Which is, obviously, untrue. I'm sorry I came off like an utter, pretentious bish. That wasn't my intentions in the slightest. I just feel like, I dunno, I'm in debt to this place, which I guess I can make up through returning the help i received to other members.

I know how to achieve that little title. :p I understand what you're saying, though. It does make sense and I don't know how safe of a system it'd be to begin with. Thank you for taking the time to answer.

You guys are really running with that two cents thing. I guess me coming off as an uber bitch encouraged that. Once again, I'm sorry for coming off like a twat. I shouldn't have worded it the way I did. I didn't even take into account the minor aspect of it nor the anonymity some members rely on when dealing with more personal issues. I just got the idea from a poetry center that I subscribe to. I didn't take the time to weigh le pros and cons and how it would be applied in this case... Thank you, though. :)
This pretty much sums it up:
And: Thank you, Ezra. I got the gist of things. :)
Thank you three for putting me in my much needed place. And i apologize for coming off the way I did. It wasn't my intentions.
