View Full Version : Why are so many surprised to hear of someone bi dating someone of the opposite sex?

Hello.
I noticed something. When people say they are bisexual, most look on or go, "okay." And yet when the person who is okay with either gender dates someone of the opposite gender it may shock someone or they'll respond with the phrase, "I thought you were bi Jenna, why are you dating Charles?"

Is it me or have you ever noticed anything like this?
Where I live, many can't seem to understand bisexuality, they think it means homosexual or confused which is odd to me.

Any thoughts?

I think the assumption is that whenever you hear something other than "straight," they must like the same gender. People are uncomfortable with the concept that sexuality, like many other things, is a spectrum, and it's not exactly quantifiable, and so there's no 100% attraction one way or the other.

I've actually never heard that before. Bi means they are attracted to both genders, and I've never met anyone that was surprised a bi person was dating the opposite sex.

It's the same way for same sex. People are just unaware or ignorant about what bisexual actually means.

What do you mean the same for the same sex? Oh, I get it, disregard this...
I told some friends I was bisexual and they didn't know whether I wanted a boyfriend or girlfriend. My answer was either, it is a spectrum, especially bisexuality.
