A brief synopsis of the period:

When a girl is between the ages of (typically about) 9 and 16, she enters puberty. Females are built to eventually give birth, and during puberty her body gets ready for this. the womb practiced building up layers of blood and tissue and such stuff, which during a pregnancy acts to insulate and protect the baby. If a fertilized egg doesn't implant itself in the womb though, there's no use for this stuff, and the womb gets rid of it. Once every 28 days (on average), it comes out through the vagina and a girl has her period, or menstrual cycle. This typically lasts from 3 to 7 days, and may be accompanied by cramping, pain in the lower stomach due to the vaginal muscles squeezing to expel the fluids we mentioned earlier, and mood swings due to an increase in hormones around this time, as well as other various symptoms. Once this happens on a regular schedule, it will continue to happen once a month until the woman reaches either menopause around age 40-50 or has her reproductive organs removed, whichever comes first.

I encourage you to talk to your parents about this though if you're really curious or if I didn't make sense. They know all about these things. :)
