I'm curious why people listen to the music they are listening to.
Does it have anything to do with your personality? Does your music match your personality or is it completely opposite (like a "girly" girl all pink and sparkles listening to death metal)?
Did you grow up with it? I have a friend who's dad was a violinist, and he grew up and now is in a meta/rock/punk band.
Has your past life, such as childhood, or abuse affected your music style? Or maybe current issues? A friend listens to metal like THREAT SIGNAL - A New Beginning, he plays piano, the oboe, and the drums. But he also smokes, and does weed; I don't know if that has any correlation with it.
Can you "feel" the music you listen to? Another friend of mine, he listens to metal, but when I listen to it, I can't feel it. It's like my heart's having a seizure with all the drums and screaming. The tempo's not right for me.
I grew up learning the piano, sang in a choir, and later learned the violin, and that's why I listen to classical. My parents introduced me Thai pop and dance/fast paced music, so I listen to things that move me, such as beats (ex. Diplo & GTA - Boy Oh Boy). During my childhood, I haven't been bullied or abused. Of course I've had bad times, but not to the point I was depressed or considering suicide. I do not drink, smoke, or do drugs. I just seem to like upbeat music .
What kind of music do you listen to? And also answer the questions above too please! :D

Does it have anything to do with your personality? Does your music match your personality or is it completely opposite (like a "girly" girl all pink and sparkles listening to death metal)? - Honestly, I'd say it's the opposite. I have a feminine, possibly at times country style dress, but I absolutely hate pop and most country music. I'm not really sure what kind of music I listen to, but it doesn't match my personality and such. I'd probably fall under the sparkly pink girly girl listening to death metal music, because I have before. :P
Did you grow up with it? - Nope. I used to love pop (katy perry, lady gaga, rihanna, etc), however I absolutely cannot stand it now. I would say I grew up with somewhat of a mix, however my parents love opera and classical (both not my favorites), and that was mainly what I was played as a younger kid. I didn't listen to any type of what I listen to now back in the days, so nope, I didn't grow up with it.
Has your past life, such as childhood, or abuse affected your music style? Or maybe current issues? - Absolutely. I love songs with meaning to them, and songs that I can connect deep, feelings to. Sometimes those are feelings of hurt, betrayal, suicidal thoughts, etc. Other times, they're my happy feelings, and being on top of the world. Other times, it's just whatever I need at that time. But absolutely, my past issues and current issues affect what I listen to. Not so much the type though, but in a lyrical sense if that makes any sense. The only way it might have affected my style would be that I do love heavier music now, stuff that I can pump up and drown out the rest of the world with.
Can you "feel" the music you listen to? - I think I answered that above, actually. I love music and lyrics that I can connect with.

I listen to anything and everything. It just depends on my mood, honestly. If I'm depressed, I listen to one band or artist, if I'm happy, I'll listen to a different one. It just has to do with my mood. I love having multiple bands that are in different genres because each genre has a different tone, to me. I see it as having a certain meaning behind each genre.

Does it have anything to do with your personality? Yes, a lot, I really identify with a lot of linkin park lyrics (just 1 example), especially the whole you're other self type theme thay have a lot of.
Did you grow up with it? My parent's are from the 60's and 70's and are VERY Christian, I grew up with older christian music, but it's far from what I normally listen to.
Has your past life, such as childhood, or abuse affected your music style? -Evanescence is so sad, that's why I love it, I can really feel the emotion, esp. in correlation to past events-
Can you "feel" the music you listen to? Definately, at least for most of it.
What kind of music do you listen to? Alternate Rock, like Evanescence, Linkin Park, 3 days grace, Icon for hire, breaking Benjamin, etc... and then more fast paced modern music, esp. nightcore's of pre-existing songs

Does it have anything to do with your personality? Partially, I am quite a happy person and what I listen to (salsa mostly) is very happy music.
Did you grow up with it? To a certain extent, although I more of re-discovered salsa in my early teens.
Has your past life, such as childhood, or abuse affected your music style? Or maybe current issues? Well my situation can make me relate to one or another song, but not change what I listen to.
Can you "feel" the music you listen to? I can feel the desire to dance when I listen to salsa, so yes, I guess.

The music I listen to is metal.
Does it have anything to do with your personality?
Not sure, most people are surprised I like it if they haven't known me long.
Did you grow up with it?
Definitely not, my parents don't understand metal, let alone why I like it.
Has your past life, such as childhood, or abuse affected your music style?
Um. I don't know. A lot of people have had it worse although there has been a few 'incidents'. And I've been self harming on and off since I was about eight. Also see answer below.
Can you "feel" the music you listen to?
Yes, I think that might be one of the main reasons I like it. Metal has so much feeling in it. Most of the time I feel kind of numb and sometimes I don't feel any emotions. Also when I feel angry or sad listening to the raw emotional energy helps.
What kind of music do you listen to? See signature :P Specifically Death, Power or Celtic metal.

I listen to Rock, Classic Rock and Metal because it is the type of music I like.
I don't think it has anything to do with my personality or my past.
No I didn't grow up with it.

Does it have anything to do with your personality? Does your music match your personality or is it completely opposite (like a "girly" girl all pink and sparkles listening to death metal)? It has something to do with my personality, which is becoming darker, unfortunately. I used to be upbeat all the time. Now, that's not so
Did you grow up with it? No. I didn't grow up with metal
Has your past life, such as childhood, or abuse affected your music style? Or maybe current issues? Nope
Can you "feel" the music you listen to? Oh yeah, definitely
What kind of music do you listen to? And also answer the questions above too please! I listen to classic rock and various sub-genres of metal, but mainly just stripped-down metal. I will, however, occasionally listen to some heavier, more extreme, types of metal

I listen to Rap, more specifically Underground Rap, Old School Rap(80s,90s).
Does it have anything to do with your personality? Does your music match your personality or is it completely opposite (like a "girly" girl all pink and sparkles listening to death metal)?
A lot of the rappers I listen to (Mos Def, Immortal Technique,2pac) are socially conscious and have some type of political message in their songs. I'm very into politics and that kind of stuff. Also, most of the rap I listen to is jazzy and dark themed with piano beats which I absolutely love. I like rap with a soft beat, not none of that loud bass shit that on the Mainstream radio today.
Did you grow up with it?
Yeah mainly, I live in a mostly Black area in the middle of Chicago, you wont hear any Country or Death Metal around my parts.
Has your past life, such as childhood, or abuse affected your music style? Or maybe current issues?
Not to sound like a bad ass or anything but I live in a pretty poor, crime infested area where shootings and shit like that are common. The rappers I listen to don't glamorize crime and poverty but speak against it and speak on how we are destroying ourselves through it.
Can you "feel" the music you listen to?
Yes I can actually, I really get into the beats and the background noises more than I do the actual lyrics. I'll spend hours listening to instrumentals.
What kind of music do you listen to?
I answered that above but here are the artist/rappers I enjoy: Immortal Technique,Chino XL,Nas, Mos Def, Biggie,2pac, Old 50 Cent, Old Kanye, Common, Ras Kass, Jay Z just to name a few

Does it have anything to do with your personality? Does your music match your personality or is it completely opposite (like a "girly" girl all pink and sparkles listening to death metal)? Kind of. I'm both quiet and energetic at the same time. Idk if indie rock shows that ...
Did you grow up with it? Not at all. It just came to me.
Has your past life, such as childhood, or abuse affected your music style? Or maybe current issues? Yes. Some of my music is really depressing and sad, women is really happy. Its a mix.
Can you "feel" the music you listen to? Of course.
What kind of music do you listen to? Pop rock, indie rock, and little bits of everything else.

Does it have anything to do with your personality? Does your music match your personality or is it completely opposite (like a "girly" girl all pink and sparkles listening to death metal)? It pretty much matches it, although with every different genre a different facet of my personality is covered. You look at two extremities of my music taste, like synthpop and power metal and it's hard to see how they can go together but I think they match my personality perfectly.
Did you grow up with it? It's funny that you mention that because when I look back, I hate all the music I listened to as a kid except one time my dad played Version 2.0 by Garbage on a long car trip. I say it's funny because Garbage is quite square in one of my genres nowadays, even though at the time I was all NSYNC and Evanescence. Nowadays, I share more music taste with my dad than ever.
Has your past life, such as childhood, or abuse affected your music style? Or maybe current issues? My music taste evolves as I evolve I think. My past doesn't influence it directly, although I tend to gravitate toward songs with content relating to things I've experienced. But in the past, I've limited myself to certain music, like metal in my goth phase and what not. As I've let myself just be, my music taste has done the same.
Can you "feel" the music you listen to? Oh yeah. I don't know why I would listen to it if I didn't feel it. I love eargasm songs. People tend to have different definitions of eargasm which is weird to me. When I hear someone else's eargasm I don't see it, but mine are just... wow. It's when the music just does what you want it to. I don't know. I have yet to be able to define an eargasm, or come up with some equation on how you elicit an eargasm from me.
What kind of music do you listen to? Alternative, synthpop, darkwave, piano rock, electropop, dark cabaret, industrial rock, steampunk, dream pop, etc etc.

Does it have anything to do with your personality? Does your music match your personality or is it completely opposite (like a "girly" girl all pink and sparkles listening to death metal)?
Kinda to do with my personality, I basically listen to pop mostly (my favourite singers are Demi Lovato, Kelly Clarkson, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Rihanna and Jessica Mauboy) with a bit of pretty much everything else mixed in! I don't like jazz, heavy metal and stuff like that , classical or opera (and probably a few other styles too) though. I'm gay and so it kinda ties in with the stereotypes of that, but I'm not hugely camp...
Did you grow up with it? Yep, the first CD single I ever got was Born To Try by Delta Goodrem haha and my first album was Alright, Still by Lily Allen, both pop and I've always listened to it!
Has your past life, such as childhood, or abuse affected your music style? Or maybe current issues? Not really, like above it's just what I've always listened to mostly although my tastes have widened a bit in the last couple of years. As I said in the first question, I like a bit of everything now with some exceptions although mostly it's pop.
Can you "feel" the music you listen to? Definitely, songs like Skyscraper by Demi Lovato really connect with me and I can relate, whereas some of my friends who might listen to totally different stuff would just think it's vapid.

Does it have anything to do with your personality? Kind of. I listen to multiple genres so, whatever I'm feeling that day is what I'll listen to.
Did you grow up with it? Yes. My dad was real big into classic rock (he grew up on it) so I just started to listen to his albums. My mom grew up on classic country, so I listened to her albums. Some of what I listen to I found on my own, or from other relatives
Has your past life, such as childhood, or abuse affected your music style? Or maybe current issues? Yes. My dad took me to a lot of concerts of his favorite bands when I was young, so I really got into classic rock as well as newer rock. My mom took me to a few country concerts, so I got into older and newer country.
Can you "feel" the music you listen to? Yes, definitely. I start headbanging when listening to rock, tapping my foot when listening to country. Depending on what I'm listening to I go through different emotions, like I go back to what happened when I first heard the song
What kind of music do you listen to? Classic rock (AC/DC, Beatles, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Kiss, etc) classic country (Waylon Jennings, George Jones, Alabama, Oak Ridge Boys, Haggard, etc) as well as pop (Ke$ha, Lorde, Lana Del Rey, etc)

Q:Does it have anything to do with your personality? Does your music match your personality or is it completely opposite (like a "girly" girl all pink and sparkles listening to death metal)?
A:I find that your personality is usually based on your music taste. And my friends are always telling me "you're one of the most metal persons I've ever known, and you're bi, how does that work?"
Q: Did you grow up with it?
A:well kinda I guess, my dad listened to metallica but that hasn't influenced my music taste in the slightest
Q:Has your past life, such as childhood, or abuse affected your music style? Or maybe current issues?
A: I think your childhood has a massive part in music taste, and I think that people like me listen to metal because they can relate to it in a way that "normal" people don't understand
Q:Can you "feel" the music you listen to?
A:yeah I defiantly can, I think it's because I'm a musician (of the metal kind) so I have a relation to the music itself anyway
Q:What kind of music do you listen to? And also answer the questions above too please!
A:As you can tell by my sig... I like all kinds of metal

Does it have anything to do with your personality? Does your music match your personality or is it completely opposite (like a "girly" girl all pink and sparkles listening to death metal)? I really don't know. My music matches what I think and feel, and how that affects my personality or the other way around I don't know. I know it is both ways though,
Did you grow up with it? Yes.
Has your past life, such as childhood, or abuse affected your music style? Or maybe current issues? Yes, simply growing up changed me and therefore my taste in music.
Can you "feel" the music you listen to? Yes. I'm in it.
What kind of music do you listen to? And also answer the questions above too please! Alternative rock/electronic music, along with some epic music. Have many 'random' pop music tracks I like as well.

Does it have anything to do with your personality?
I think the music I listen to matches my personality/style. I'm not at all girly and my fashion sense is black jeans and band tops so that's pretty much every average rock/metal fan.
Did you grow up with it?
Not at all. My dad listened to old rock like Queen and shit and my mum liked *cough* James Blunt *cough*. I only started getting into rock just before I joined VT a couple years ago because I used to be into the pop/rap stuff and then last year I started listening to heavier music and I'm happy with my music taste now ^-^
Has your past life, such as childhood, or abuse affected your music style? Or maybe current issues?
I'm actually not sure. I do like bands that have lyrics I can relate to because then I feel a lot closer to the music but I won't read too much into it. I enjoy music and I wouldn't like to think that I'm into this style because of my negative childhood experiences. Haven't a clue though.
Can you "feel" the music you listen to?
Definitely. Music is the one thing I can really connect to. Especially live music. Like if I'm sitting in the shopping centre and a band is playing I'll be tapping my feet and really getting into it (inwardly) even if I didn't like the style of music. The music I actually like I can really get into though, like it's a very personal thing for me but it's so soothing, I honestly don't know where I'd be without music because it's guided me to where I am today.
What kind of music do you listen to?
Sub-genres of rock and metal, some punk. I would list them but the list would be long.

I'm an energetic guy, I like listening to happy, bouncy songs, but I don't connect to them as much as I do with like, doomsday, sad songs. They feel more real.

Does it have anything to do with your personality? Does your music match your personality or is it completely opposite (like a "girly" girl all pink and sparkles listening to death metal)?
For me, you can see some correlation between the music I listen to and my personality- I'm a pretty artistic, carefree, and playful guy; the type that would run through a field or dance in the rain. I'm not the most popular person or most socially inclined on campus, but everyone thinks I'm sweet. I like the "earthy" vocal guitar type music, like Technicolor Eyes by Backseat Goodbye, and other alternative bands like Vampire Weekend.
Did you grow up with it? My pre-2011 music list was very broad. My parents are very music inclined, and my mom had like 1500 songs/music videos on her computer. My family would often have what I would call "music video nights" where we would gather up in my parents bedroom with snacks and watch music videos. She was really into the classic bands of the pre-90's (like AC/DC, The Strokes, Alien Ant Farm, etc) in addition to some of the more modern hit bands like My Chemical Romance and P!nk. The more "earthy" music has kind of been a new interest for me. I started to get into it after my parents split, as it allowed me to almost escape my troubles for a little bit.
Has your past life, such as childhood, or abuse affected your music style? Or maybe current issues? In a way, yes. After my parents split and threw my emotions on spin cycle I started to move from whatever was on the car radio and music video nights to my more current taste for alternative. I don't listen to Coldplay as much any more because the songs stress me out and make me upset.
Can you "feel" the music you listen to? Oh definitely.
If you listen to Technicolor Eyes, it kind of relates to me on how the person just loves life all around. On the flip side, Coldplay is the most relatable in the sense that I'm struggling. The Scientist by Coldplay always gets me because I can feel the pain that Chris is going through. I've been in his shoes many times and every time it sucks.
What kind of music do you listen to? And also answer the questions above too please! :D
For the most part, I listen to Alternative; but I listen to a lot of music (thank you mom for leaving your computer behind when you left :P).
Some of the songs I play a lot:
-Technicolor Eyes by Backseat Goodbye
-Make Light by Passion Pit
-Little Secrets by Passion Pit
-Huddle Formation by The Go! Team
-Unbelievers by Vampire Weekend
-Ya Hey by Vampire Weekend
-Diane Young by Vampire Weekend
-Hard to Explain by The Strokes
and that's just the beginning!

Does it have anything to do with your personality? Does your music match your personality or is it completely opposite (like a "girly" girl all pink and sparkles listening to death metal)? Personally, I don't think it does. A lot of people around me would definitely say otherwise though. My personality can change on a dime when I'm listening to music or even playing it. For example, I occasionally perform with a cover band (drums and vocals mostly, but some guitar here or there), and my demeanor changes drastically. I've noticed it, but I suppose that's just me getting into it. As for music matching my personality, I don't think I really listen to anything that comes close to my personality, because I listen to a wide range of genres and artists that its hard to nail anything down.
Did you grow up with it? Of course I did. I grew up listening to vinyl and cassette tapes. I knew every note of the "Comfortably Numb" solos before I was 10 and could play them by the time I was 12. My father was a musician in college, he used to teach people how to play guitar, he was a guitarist in many smaller bands, he would occasionally drum, and was often behind the production board. So my whole life, I've been around this stuff. Now is the music I listen to NOW the stuff I grew up with? Some of it, yeah. Stuff like Rush, Pink Floyd, and Genesis, yeah, I grew up with that. But I really started to discover a lot more things in my teens.
Has your past life, such as childhood, or abuse affected your music style? Or maybe current issues? Not at all, but I do see how music is a gateway for a lot of people to vent frustrations or how they use it as a healing mechanism. Listen to John Lennon's first solo album and the first track, which is absolutely gut-wrenching. By the end of the track, he's screaming and crying out for his mother and father to come back to him; and that was a result of them not being around for most of his life. I also can see how music can be used to convey messages about current issues, but I generally don't condone such practices. I think, most of the time, it's corny and unneeded to drag something that's going to be, almost 99% of the time, political into something that is purely non-political. That's the last place I want music to be. But many musicians have helped in political movements, and I do commend them for doing what they believe to be right.
Can you "feel" the music you listen to? Depends what you mean by "feel". "Feel" as in emotionally feel it or physically feel it? If my emotionally feel it, yeah I can. I can feel the emotions of many songs, and I have emotional connections to many songs. Physically, it's hard to really feel a song, so I won't touch on that :P. But if we're going to really talk about "feeling" it, I suppose I do dance from time to time. It's a really weird spastic dance, like Thom Yorke. Unless if you've seen him dance before, you probably won't understand it.
What kind of music do you listen to? Depends what I'm into at the time. This past summer I was really into Radiohead. Right now, I'm starting to get back into Rush, Pink Floyd, Tool, and a lot of other progressive related artists. But yeah, it just depends whatever I'm into at the time. Right now, it's a mish-mash of things. So right now, it's Lady Gaga, Radiohead, Tool, Pink Floyd, Rush, Opeth, Nine Inch Nails, and Madonna.
