Think cannabis is harmless? It drove this grammar school boy insane - then killed him
Melanie Leahy has many photos of her son, Matthew. But it is the one of him aged 13, fresh-faced and dressed in his grammar school uniform, that is the most painfully poignant of all.
'Matthew had just been awarded top marks in all his academic subjects and was on the cusp of adulthood, with his whole future ahead of him,' she recalls. 'Even as a boy he spoke about his future, of having a large family and how he wanted to start up his own business.'
Tragically, it is a future Melanie will never see for her only child. For Matthew, 20, previously a Grade A student as well as an expert skiier and qualified lifeguard, hanged himself last November. His suicide was triggered, doctors believe, by smoking cannabis.
Any suicide is an utter tragedy, but what makes Matthew's case even more shocking is that the young man took his own life while an in-patient at a mental health hospital.
Despite being on hourly observation because of his unstable state of mind, Matthew had managed to hang himself.

Too much cannabis makes you your own enemy. A bad situation to end up with.

one tragic case shouldn't be applied to the rest of the world, especially coming from the Daily Mail...

Sounds like synthetic stuff, or something laced. Too much THC can cause paranoia, which sounds like why he committed suicide. Then again, eating too many soy beans can cause infertility.
I also don't believe everything I read in the media.

I think the neurotransmitter receptors were affected.
As with everything, too much of something can only harm you.

Too much of anything can harm, yes. Hence the term 'too much', I guess :(.

All drugs are harmful, to say otherwise is ridiculous.

I think homework has caused more suicides than cannabis.

Id like to know what it was laced with that the media "just so happened" to leave out. There are plenty of things that can fuck you up that they lace it with, but straight weed(in my opinion) isnt that bad. Look at the guys in Jamaica. Thats their religion and they live well into old age, and they dont lace it with anything. I think they left it out to make people think that its all bad.

As someone that smoked cannabis and has also dealt with depression, if you are going to partake its important that you have a strong grasp on where you are in your physical and emotional health beforehand.

I'm pretty sure you don't imply medicinal drugs? (Even though those could be at a point.)
Drugs (as in Heroin, Cocaine, and in this case Marijuana) are used because of the harm it does to the mind, in the end. If people could only gain intelligence, this wouldn't happen, and no, depression is no excuse. I'd almost killed myself a few times, and I have never consumed any "drugs" or alcohol (except vodka ON ACCIDENT, nasty stuff, and traces of whiskey that are in my uncle's birthday cake every year, not great either)
Being an A Student doesn't mean anything really. For example, no.1 of my class is confused about topics extremely difficult to get confused. He probably just maintained his grades.
Either that... No I just went through that.

I would like to believe that the weed was laced. I would really like to know. It seems almost paradoxical given all the people who smoke it with no effect but pleasure. (I guess, I hear that anyway, I assume most people get pleasure from it, I've never had it.) Right now I would have to assume it was laced and unsafe and that safe weed is a wonderful experience.

i don't think that you should blame weed for the kid killing himself maybe nobody knew his real personality and did not want to tell his family what he was thinking so he though the only way out was suicide. i really hate when people want to blame something or someone to get closure like when they blamed marilyn manson for columbine

Alcohol can do the same thing, yet it's still legal, while Marijuana is not.

Sad, but this is also the daily mail we're talking about. Very typical of them to go as far to say "cannabis killed this person" when there are very clearly a lot of things going on with his mental health in the first place. I'm very sad to hear this story, but the daily mail is a little slanderous, don't you think?

i know a kid who used pot to calm his anxieties but he started smoking it twice a day and he ended up making his anxieties worse. everything is good in moderation. there are many things that are good for you but can eventually harm you if you get too much of it. sunlight is a good example.
