Hi :)

I have a bit of a problem. For my science research class, I need to do a "recipe project". Pretty much it's a science project that has something to do with cooking. I need a solid project with a clear dependent variable, independent variable, and something that will give me quantitative (measurable) data. I'm not very good at cooking (more like I fail at cooking), so the project's a little out of my element. I came up with a few ideas like seeing how the type of flour effects the rise of pumpkin bread, but my Mom (the one who does the grocery shopping as well as most of the cooking in my family) shot the idea down. She said it would be hard to do and too expensive. Any new ideas would be greatly appreciated. It doesn't even have to be baking. I just hope I can get my proposal in on time. I wish my Mom could have shot my project idea down when I first came up with it instead of telling me no the weekend before the proposal is due, but whatever that's life. Thanks for the help!

Gravy. When making Gravy you use a starch to thicken it. You can use different types of starches and measure the density of the Gravy in order to see which starch thickens a broth more effectively. Most starches are made up of similar molecules and you can see which similar molecular structures lead to a thicker sauce.

An experiment a lot of my peers did in middle school was with cupcakes/cookies. You get something out of it, anyway.

Just throwing it out there, but something to do with pudding or jello? That shouldn't be too hard, expensive, or time consuming...

Thanks for all the ideas! I've also asked a few of my friends and one of them came up with the idea of seeing how different amounts of water effect how high a pancake rises. I'll be sure to tell you which project I choose. Thanks again!

I ended up choosing the pancake project, but maybe if I have some free time I can try out some other ones for fun. Thanks again!

A good idea would either be simple baking or something else. That is because baking takes extreme precision and complicated baking could be interesting for you. Try doing something like muffins and add or take out stuff there are your variables. Be careful though: DO NOT ever take out any flour or change the amount of eggs or butter IF you want it to be edible. If you're not planning on eating anything then go ahead just be careful. Otherwise good luck!
