How do you feel about the phrase "merry christmas" and like phrases and festivities (christmas trees, christmas music, other festive traditions) being banned from use in various corporations and in the public sector for fear of offending non-christians?
I personaly oppose the banning of the terms and beleive that if you are offended by them then you are overly sensitive. If a jewish person where to wish me a happy hanaka then i would thank them, even though i am not jewish. It is just a common coutosy

Agreed. There are too many sensitive people in the world that want to limit other people what they can or can not do (as I stated in a post I started earlier) and those who are like that just need to take a chill pill and have the Golden Rule jammed in there head a thousand times over.

It amazes me that people are that easily offended. I'm an atheist, but never once have I thought of the term 'Christmas' as offensive.

People need to get over themselves. Some people celebrate Christmas for the birth of Jesus, and others celebrate it because they get presents and stuff. Everyone has a different attitude towards holidays.

I think it is silly. Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Halloween, Happy Hanukkah, whatever - it is all the same to me.

I think of it being more respectful. Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, Easter, etc...I don't celebrate them because that's what I believe in (some I don't celebrate) but more for my family. Unless someone is going around screaming "today is Christmas the birth of Jesus! If you don't believe in that and come pray with me you will go to hell you fucking idiot! " I think you should respect that p3rson & their religion.

The religions should be respected. But merry Christmas is used because Christians account for at least 50% of the population (in the US)
I am an atheist, but it doesn't offend me ( I nonreligiously celebrate Christmas). The only thing that does there is the "under god" section of the US Pledge of Allegiance.

People get butthurt over someone saying "Merry Christmas"? Take a pill, relax, those are the holidays.

I'm not offended when people say "Merry Christmas" to me. I guess being in a Catholic school system does that to you. It's also what we say aty house too and have said it for my whole life. Even though I've been told that they call it Christmas because it has Christ in there and all that and I'm not religious, that's about the only thing that doesn't offend me because the majority of my Country say it so it's a little hard to avoid especially with it being a Holiday.

I see nothing wrong with "Merry Christmas". I'm atheist and don't celebrate it but I don't get offended if someone wishes me Merry Christmas or something. Not unless they also try to shove their religion on me.
I also agree with Twilight Sniper; the one thing in the US that offends me is the "under god" part in the Pledge of Allegiance. Should be removed...but that's another topic

I can say whatever I want. If someone seriously has a problem with me wishing them well, they can suck my big toe.
If it's okay for me to tell someone "fuck off' or "shut up" I have no idea why anyone would mind "Have a Merry Christmas."
I mean my best friends are all atheist, and most of them even celebrate Christmas, and they sure don't freak out if I say Merry Christmas.

Christmas isn't about Christ anymore, everyone knows that. It's a commercialized holiday, so religion has no place in that.
The religions should be respected. But merry Christmas is used because Christians account for at least 50% of the population (in the US)

That's so insignificant though. I'm not religious, but I don't care about that.

That's something called tolerance, just have to deal with it. It may suck but it's not really that huge of a problem.

On a side note, I'm pretty sure "Under God" was added sometime after it's creation(I'm too lazy to look it up, but I think it was in the 50's or 60's?), so in all reality, there should be no reason to not replace it. I'm Christian, in a sense, but I do believe that religion should be kept out of it. But I don't mind it being there. Honestly, who really cares? We live in a predominantly Christian nation, although that is changing. Maybe it'll be a bigger deal later on, but for now, just either skip the words, or as The Tenth Man said, replace it with "Under Canada" :P Just please, at least show some form of respect and stand up with your hand over your heart. Nothing makes me angrier than kids who refuse to stand up for it because "It's lame". Yes, you don't have to, but it's more of a common courtesy.

I would if some of them didn't *LITERALLY* scream it into my ear...
And plus, I said earlier in this, it slightly offends me, and I don't even really complain about it I'm just explaining why. Score 1 for reading. Score 0 for Kentucky Windage.
I don't ruin their lives about it either in explaining the reasoning, and even then I don't to the Christians in my school because the fact I'm atheist seems to offend them more than me with the pledge being only compliant to Christianity. (Even more than it seems to the guy that can't even tell I wasn't really complaining.)

I myself am a Christian and I love Christmas, however Christmas is celebrated worldwide and surprisingly even across faiths, but it is a Christian holiday. I find it silly that it offends someone in the first place.
I am not Jewish yet Hanakkuh never offends me. True, some say Christians are like latter Jews but still. I like wishing people a Merry Christmas or Happy if they prefer and a Happy Hanakkuh when I know they celebrate it.
I personally thank those who wish me well.
If you say, "May good karma come to you" I say "thanks."
If you say, "May Zeus bless you" I say "thanks"
If you say, "May Allah watch over you" I say "thanks.
I don't care your faith, as long you respect me, my faith, and are wishing me well, I have no problem returning the kindest of gestures.

I agree, we have a right to say things and do not shoot down those who only wish you well.

You can't make them leave though my friend. Although this ma be the problem with us Christians, we're sometimes a bit too passive. You can march in a church with a gun or be blasphemous (misspelled?) and we just pray for you or ask if you desire help. It's not bad being peaceful, but in Muslim countries, the peaceful get ran over... which sucks.

Neither are offensive, I think it's super-hypocritical to complain about people that are offended by "Merry Christmas" and meanwhile think that "Happy Holidays" is more offensive.

If I don't know you well enough to know your faith, I say "Happy Holidays", because I would rather not piss you off. While I am agnostic, I don't get offended when someone wishes me will with a religion tied to it, I just accept it, and thanks, and move on with my life. I'm pretty sure that I saw something in here about the Pledge. "Under God" was added in June of 1954 as a sort of "religious reflection" measure to be observed in our schools and public services daily as well as an anti-Communism measure (because we all know that if someone is a Communist, they MUST hate God and lack religion #Sarcasm). Personally, I do NOT say this when I say the pledge, and instead I take a pause. In my opinion, I feel that the phrase "under God" should be removed, as this nation was founded on the basis of religious freedom and should not have any reference in any of its documents to any religion, period.

I'm not Christian but I have no problem with anyone wishing me a merry Christmas, inviting me to a Christmas party, or anything else like that. Honestly, I'll probably celebrate Christmas when I'm grown up, not as a religious thing but as a celebration around joy and happiness and family and love. I don't see anything wrong with it. I love seeing all the lights on people's houses and their trees, it makes me wish my family was Christian so we could do it too. Similarly we don't do Halloween (or Easter), unfortunately I'm not sure that's something I could get away with doing as an adult without kids. Plus, when I'm grown up it won't be a family celebration, at least with the family I have now. So yeah basically not celebrating Christmas sucks, don't take away the little joy I get from seeing everyone else publicly celebrating.
EDIT:
I just replace 'god' with 'Canada'
HAHAHAHAHA I love it I'm doing that from now on! Except, I haven't said the pledge of allegiance (don't kill me over spelling) in years and don't remember the words very well.

Quite exactly. They added it to the pledge just to challenge the Soviets a bit, the fact their populous was atheist by government regulation. And yes, that's a fairly good reason for atheistic offense in that section, the fact it was created to go against Atheism.
(I should've pointed this out much earlier, really. But I thought the way I explained it was quite sensical...)

Personally i dislike Christmas but i would not go so far as to ban it. just because one does not like it does not mean that everyone can't go and enjoy it.
