View Full Version : What Country?

So, a lot of VTers are places other than America (granted a lot are from US but still, a good portion aren't). I'm from America. I don't like it here for many reasons so I'd like to move after I graduate high school.

I'd like a country with a secular government and that welcomes foreigners. Socialist healthcare and education would be great also, and other things socialist wouldn't bother me at all but I know that is hard to find and especially hard to find that also welcomes newcomers.

I want to go to university in that country and live there long-term. My intended career is Genetic Engineering (BioChemistry), if that helps anything.

I speak English and a bit of French. I am a quick learner so a new language does not intimidate me much.

What countries fit this list? Thanks in advance, I appreciate your responses :)

Definitely Scandinavian countries, I wanted to do engineering before and Sweden is a very good place for engineering. Switzerland is supposed to be good for engineering and I've heard that Argentina is a good place to do engineering too.

Genetic Engineering and engineering are very different. Genetic Engineering is a scientific, medical research field.

Scandinavia is supposed to be pretty good. Especially Norway and Denmark.

Maybe hat fits your list now - will not suit when time comes.

But no harm in researching options and as university is on your list I guess the one thing is how your education in the US fits into any applications you may make.

Go to finland. We don't mind. But i recommend getting either a) extremely good SAT scores. there are at least 2 good universities in finland which you can get into with only SAT scores. Sure you need to learn finnish, but you can manage with english and then you can learn finnish as you go. Finland has some amazing Bio engineering facilities. So you will find work.

Other scandinavian countries work, but imo finland has more perks. Get your GED here in the US, then get a masters or higher in finland for free. And finland is working on install in nationwide free internet.

I'm quite happy with studying here. In Australia. But I would be more than happy to study elsewhere ifffffffffffffffffff I had the money.

Also, commenting on what Niilo has said -- Australia was getting something similar, the NBN, but since it was predicted to go over-budget and now since we lost Rudd as the Prime Minister, that plan went to shit. We're still getting the NBN, it's just at a more costly fee and different equipment will be used.

How do you feel about German or Austria? I think Vienna is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.

Finland seems nice, but I heard that their language in really a nightmare.

Australia is pretty good at welcoming foreigners(oh man...) and we are relatively good with universities. Scenery is good but internet is well, I live in the metropolitan of Perth, WA and our street has such bad phone lines that our home internet is wireless, not ADSL or even dial up...

Otherwise a good place

Few facts about Denmark
In Denmark you get paid for study.
Public libraries offer free wifi and internet.

Germany is a country I would prefer to not live in.

why not? Germany is at least remotely romantic so it wont be tooo hard to adjust, as appealing as Scandinavian countries may seem, the price of living is through the roof and youll be keeping probably a less than a quarter of your salary, also the cuisines of that area isnt necessarily the best if you care for that at least

So you think moving to Europe will give you a free ride due to a socialist government? That's disgusting, and for that reason you would not be wanted there.

As others have said try the Scandinavian countries (health care is amazing). You could do France (secular), since you already speak some French.

No. I never said that and if you read my post you'd see I want to be a research Genetic Engineer. That's not a free ride at all.

Germany is a country I would prefer to not live in.

Finland is about the size of Indiana and they drive on the right side, so that's good. Their GDP is about half of Indiana's as well. So I'd like to think because they are small compared to the USA, there'd be less politics in your way.

Oh and their population is similar to Indiana's

And if we believe wiki, Finland is the 8th biggest country in Europe.

If you leave though, you'll be an immigrant ! .

Don't forget Canada, and Sweden. Not sure about the middle east for you.

When you travel, better tell them you're from Canada :)

Wow. I find that rude. And what do you know? You live in the US it says.

First off Socialistic country's want people to move there because its better for their economy. It would be absurd to turn down people who want to live there. It's not a free ride, America is a shit wagon to hell for anyone who is below the poverty line. We have no future here if we don't have the money. A lot of us here in USA do not have ANY means of paying for such expensive degrees in education. And no job that we could get will be over minimum wage and will not come even remotely close to paying for any of our education. Or should we become prostitutes to pay for college? My neighbor got 5.0 in HS, she still can not afford college even with financial aid and scholarships. And most people cant score like that if they tried there utmost.

Pay off them predatory student loans eh?... Nope, not gonna happen. If you lose your job due to layoffs like so many here do you will fall behind on payments and become immediately inundated in debt. You will then be forced to live in absolute poverty or move to another country to escape the massive debt. It is EXTREMELY risky to take out any loan here in the USA for education. You CAN NOT go bankrupt, they will garnish your wages, even take all of your welfare or disability if you have it. You will be one of those people standing on the side of the road with a sign asking for work and food.

For many of us with expensive degrees we have 2 options. Move away and live elsewhere on a permanent basis, or stay here impoverished until we die of a treatable illness because we cant afford care or proper food.

We want to leave the US because there's nothing here for us! Were not going to move to Europe get a 'free ride' and then move back here where we cant find a job? That would be insane.

Many Scandinavian country make gaining citizen ship very very easy. The welcome newcomers because its better for their country. For example and I know this personally, Sweden is very newcomer happy and a great place!

Please do not insult people for wanting a better life than what is provided here. Maybe you like it but you cant make us stay by belittling us.

Your on the right track my friend! I plan to do the same, though i very much want to spend a good deal of time in Russia for personal reasons and the fact I love so much about the place, its very unique and I love the Language, I already speak it but I don't get to use it in the USA. After that I would move to Canada or perhaps spend some time in another place interesting if I could swing it. I have also thought of moving to another place for college as my degree is FAR more expense than I or my parents could ever hope to afford or pay off loans on.

And lets get something straight for these other people shall we?... Scandinavian country's you are speaking of TAKE CARE OF EVERYONE WHO LIVES THERE! Even the pour have homes, food healthcare and the disabled have the same. Not like America where you can't get decent health care to save your ass unless your filthy rich, you struggle to find a job and when you cant you starve on the street. Actually Russia has some better Ideas on healthcare than the USA, they may lack in many ways but they provide many things the USA does not but should. Here you can get sick or hurt and your fucked if you cant pay for your emergency care, in Russia that part is free. The USA should at least be able to out do them on that...

And about the salary... Those large taxes are ONLY for the highest earners so the country doesn't become like the USA with greedy billionaires that own everything you look at. Living cost is higher but so are the wages so it equals out. Here in USA the rich get the tax breaks and the pour have to pay up. It is opposite in socialistic country's.

The happiest place on earth is Denmark. They are SOCIALIST! Capitalism always turns to plutocracy which is what we have in USA now and the reason we have gone to pot.

Just so everyone has the facts :)

My country Slovenia fits it. Sort of but les and les. Free schools and universety is mostly free, for citizents mind you. And you can get around prety whell with english (ou english native speeker has not picked up a worh and he has lived here for cca 9 yesčars ;) ). Yeah the goverment is secular of course. Great vacation options skiing and swimming in the see without leaving the country, you can even do both with no pasport and in the same day if you wanted to. The universety of Ljubljana is among the top 500 in the world. But be awere that most hily educated people are trying to leave the country (no jobs).

Have a look at Scotland too - atleast for us it's free for uni, not sure about foreign students though. Some good uni's around here, if you've got the grades there's the high calibre ones such as St Andrews, but still many good ones in and around Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Come here to the UK! Financially it's a good option because you can take loans for fees and living costs and you don't have to pay anything back until you start earning over £21k.
