What are the causes and symptoms of loneliness?

I'm an only child and seriously feel that i'm really alone. My so called friends don't seem to look at me as a unique individual and I was just curious to see it my symptoms and causes match up.

I'd say feeling lonely is a result of not being able to communicate. Not because of spending a lot of time alone or something like that.

By that I mean, when you're unable to communicate with others like I am, you'll get very lonely. Just because there's rarely ever anyone around.
