Unfortunately after not cutting for months I relapsed and cut.
I was wondering first aid wise, if it was okay to use an alcohol based product to clean the wounds after cutting?

I have tried once or twice before and don't mind the pain, but was mostly wondering if it was any good for cleaning the wounds?

If you're thinking of using pure alcohol, don't do it. Trust me, don't do it. I wouldn't recommend anything alcohol for wounds. Why do you think that most anti-bacterial wipes from first aid kids are alcohol-free? What alcohol will do if you use it is get rid of literally all the germs, even the good ones which you do actually need. Use soap and water, it's the safest option here. If you want to use alcohol, by all means use it, it will clean the wound but it's not the best thing to use.

Forgot that kills the good germs too. Yeah it will clean but it will slow down the healing too.

I have used rubbing alcohol because I have a high tolerance to pain, but I always follow it up with an antibiotic ointment. Alcohol cleans and sterilizes but once it quickly evaporates, then you're still left with an unprotected wound. Something like Bactine is beast for cleaning and protecting and has much less of a sting. I have a feeling like Mynick says, pure alcohol slows healing.

Just wash it with soap and water and if you have triple antibiotic like neosporin, put it on afterwards, it will keep dirt and stuff out and help heal them faster. Alchohol just kills all germs, which kill the ones the you need to heal the wound. But if you just use it the once to kill the germs then it won't harm much.

Yes you can. Only on the first cleaning though as after it starts to heal it will do more damage than good.

Clean first with soap and water. Then wipe with rubbing alcohol. After that put triple antibiotic ointment on it and cover it or close it. Leave it along for 5 - 7 days for healing.

That's er protocol where I live. They DO use alcohol. It is safe 100% but only use it for the first cleaning.

You don't need the germs to heal the wound. The good ones just fight bad bacteria. The cells are what heal the wound.
You want to kill all the bacteria the first time you clean and your body will replenish the good bacteria. If you keep using it it can affect healing as it damages the fragile new cells. So its OK to use once but not multiple times on the same wound.

Also some water has bacteria in it but most soap is anti bacterial anyway. Er's use alcohol after the soap where I live. Soap to clean debris and alchohol to steralize. Then triple antibiotic ointment and a bandage or stitches and a bandage.

Just so you know ;)

Thank you all for the heads up, I think I will give antibiotic ointment a try next time. Since I've never actually used it before.

yea. pretty much what everyone said. though don't use bleach on an open cut. just don't. it is a lot worse than alcohol, except maybe for 100% pure alcohol. don't know. never used 100%. But bleach is extremely bad. It will burn, sting, and de color the skin(depending on the concentration of bleach)

but yea. warm water and soap.

It will sting a lot if you do, but that should help clean them.
