last friday i went to the dentist and had a filling. so they gave me stuff to make half my mouth numb while they did it. so anyways, after i left the dentist my mouth was still numb for about 2 hours. during this time i somehow managed to bite my lip. now my bottom lip has a horrible scab and really stings. the interesting thing is that it took til sunday for it to start hurting. but anyways, does anyone have any tips on how to reduce the stinging, especially when i'm trying to sleep because it kept me awake last night?

Oh, man it up a little bit. Cuts on your lip really hurt, I know, but there's not really much you can do until it heals. To my knowledge there isn't a numbing cream that is safe to put anywhere near your mouth. To clean it, just mix a bit of salt and water and use that to wash around the area of the cut. Will still like heck, but then at least you won't end up with an infection that will hurt even more. The human mouth isn't actually as hygienic as you would think it is.

Actually Kate, there are oral anesthetics such as Orajel, but Stephen, I wouldn't recommend that on an open wound, it's more for toothaches and teething babies. Just take some Motrin, keep some Vaseline or chapstick on it, and as Kate said, wash it out pretty well. Your lips touch all sorts of food and things that wouldn't be good to get in there.

I wouldn't take pain killers, because the next time (if there is one) you'll feel the same way. If you just tank it, and you have another one it wont be as bad. I get canker sores alot and I just wait till they leave. Sure it hurts, but it's not so bad. Another alternative is this stuff you can buy, I'm not exactly sure what it's called but it almost numbs the area so it doesn't hurt. It tastes REALLY bad though.

Sounds like Orajel, or there's anther that starts with a 'K'. Those work fine on sores, but I don't think they're good if Stephen has split his lip open, involving blood. A topical anesthetic could get all in the cut and cause an infection, so unless it says on the package that it's ok for an open wound, don't use it.

Poor Stephen! Do they have Ambesol in Oz? It's an OTC mild topical pain killer that's used especially for mouth pain, it was developed for babies teething. It should work nicely for you. And rinse with warm salt H2O.

The good news is that oral stuff heals really quickly, so the discomfort will be very temporary.

Yeah, but as Jessi said, you don't put something like that on a wound, Sam.

Yeah, but as Jessi said, you don't put something like that on a wound, Sam.

It depends on how deep the wound is. Teething pain ultimately causes a wound, so products like Ambesol might be OK, unless there's a huge gash which would obviously require medical intervention.

Read the label of whatever you get carefully!
