ok first suggestion is that is there any JavaScripts that can be removed from the site because at times it is painfully slow
and secondly can we bring back the feature that remembers read and unread posts? it's terrible with out it!

If I'm correct Mike removed the read and unread posts because it was slowing down the site- that's what I seem to remember happening when I was on the staff- someone may want to confirm it but I think that's why we got rid of it because it slows down the site, so it would be pretty silly to remove a JavaScript to speed up the site and then add something which slows it down
In order to reduce server load we have recently changed a setting regarding new post marking. When you log out, the database will no longer keep information on which threads you have read and which you have not. This feature puts a considerable amount of stress on the server and is necessary to make sure that VT keeps running quickly and smoothly. You can still view which threads have been posted on the current day by clicking "New Posts" in the navbar. I apologize for any inconvenience.

Basically, your post contradicted itself. :P
As Harry said, the post read was removed because it was lagging the site at a worse rate than it is. Unfortunately, there's not much else that can be done at the moment to fix the lag, we've just to grin and bear it the way it is.
If we readded the feature, VT would be unbearably slolw, and it's not worth it.

I just thought I would bring it to your attention it's missed:P
I just don't get why this site, lags, would reducing active themes help?

Trust me, mods are missing this more than members :P It makes moderation a lot harder and we now find ourselves looking at the same threads over and over. I didn't remove it to be mean, I removed it because it uses a lot of RAM on our server. That is why the site lags. If we upgrade our server package it would likely help, but I can only work so many hours in a week on top of school to pay for that.
Themes are not plugins, they don't have anything to do with the amount of RAM we use. I could disable other plugins to reduce server load, but those plugins are a lot more important than thread marking. There was a VT before we automatically marked threads for you, for the time being it just has to be that way again.

Repeating my question from another thread that no one answered..
Is that why some threads are still bold (marked unread) even though I posted a reply/read them?
EDIT: I am so stupid. My question was basically answered in this thread. Sorry...

Those threads are marked bold because you didn't click back into the forum to store the cookie that indicates that you have marked that index as read. The server no longer does that for you, your internet browser is responsible for storing those cookies.
