I haven't really heard about this group until I heard on Instagram that they are picketing at my high school (I don't go there yet, but I will next year, but I know a lot of people there).
Why do they picket at schools (I don't know why they would do this there)?
Opinions on this? Have they ever picketed at you school?

Ugh, that's horrible!
They probably picket at schools because they are trying to teach impressionable teens their beliefs. They are extremely anti-gay and very loud about it. I think it's completely wrong of them and they should all be put in jail, at least for disturbing the peace.

They have nothing better to do. Their sole purpose in life is to spread their hateful messages, even though no one listens to them. They don't expect to convert anyone. They just enjoy yelling at people that "God hates fags." They really don't do anything other than aggressively tell people their abhorrent beliefs.

They're crazy, that's why. They picket at funerals of soldiers, children, etc etc. So there's nothing unusual about them picketing at a high school, showing off their stupid beliefs and hateful messages

Money. That's why. A strangely large proportion of the Westboro Baptist church 'ruling class' (i.e the Phelps family) are lawyers. Fred Phelps has made himself a very rich man by simply turning up at events, ranting like a lunatic and taking out lawsuits against whoever he feels infringes on his rights.

Seriously, those guys are complete scum. They take basic Christian ideas, and then convolute them into something monstrous. It makes me sick. They have no reason to do the horrible things that they do.

I understand freedom of speech and all, but I don't like the demonstrations at the funerals of soldiers. Even if you don't agree with government policies and how the military is run (or what they are doing) - this is incredibly tasteless.

From what I've gathered it has nothing to do with Government policies but rather they're picketing to thank God for punishing Americans (through the war) for allowing homosexuals to infiltrate their society. They similarily turn up at the funerals of cancer victims for the same reason. Or at least that's the official line. As said it's more about making money than making a point. Individuals at funerals tend to be (understandably) emotional and a lot more prone to striking out against hecklers - it's a easy lawsuit from there.
The more you understand them the sadder it gets, really. They're not really nutters - or at least I believe a lot of it is put on for show - but rather greedy opportunits waiting to make a quick buck off the misery of others.

The only encounter that I've come across with them is at Military Funerals. I am apart of the Patriot Guard Riders and we originated around protecting Military families from these protesters. What we do is we stand around the family, with our backs to the ceremony, holding big American Flags. The protesters are right in our faces spewing their idiotic rants about god only knows what. It's sickening to hear what they have to say. I've had one right in my face, practically spitting on me when they were screaming their nonsense.
If you have any questions as to what the Patriot Guard does, feel free to PM me. I'd love to answer any questions.

Westboro Baptist is a hate group that makes ALL Christians look bad when they are false-Christians themselves. The Westboro Baptists have no scruples of external checks to keep them in line, if they were Christian the they'd know to love the sinner and have them sin no more and that if that sinner wants no help then you don't help them, you leave and pray for them and put it up to God, they forget God loves us all.

Well, the high school must be a fag enabling school, otherwise they wouldn't bother. Seriously, that's probably why they're picketing. Sorry to be so crude.

No it isn't. But you have every heard the famous quote by Oliver Wendell Holmes, "The right to swing my fist ends, where another mans' nose begins."?
Yes, we all have rights. But those rights are, or at least should be, terminated when they take away the rights of others.
Those vile oxygen thieves stand outside of funerals, telling the families of dead soldiers that they're so glad that their loved one is dead, and that God hates them, and they'll all be joining that family member in Hell soon enough. It's bad enough to say things like that to anyone, ever, but to say them at a funeral? To the mothers and fathers who lost a child? To the children who lost a parent? No. There is no excuse.

While i do not support what they say or do, they have the right to say and beleive whatever they want. They arent taking away the rights of anyone.
Disturbing the peace?
Thank you!
Well then why dont we just start arresting kids for screaming and yelling on school grounds. You cant just arrest some one for yelling while protest.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that you've never been there to see them in action. That would change your mind real fast.
Sure, they can believe what they want, and they have the right to voice that opinion, and to put their beliefs out there.
But think about this, the families that they effect? What about those peoples rights?
What about the right of a mother to lay her son to rest without hearing the chanting of a hate group behind her.
What about the right for a child to go to school without a group of people terrorizing him for being gay.
Those people's rights matter too.

I never said their right didnt matter. I just said that they can say what ever they want. Anni know people are gonna be mad at me for saying this but people have to stop being so dang sensitive. I mean yeah some things they do are wrong like at funerals but seriously, dont worry about what other people think.

I've watched a couple of BBC documentaries about this group and even have one of the pastor's granddaughters who defected last year as a friend on Facebook.
They believe that their picketing is their fulfillment of the directive in Leviticus to love your neighbor - that is, by not "suffering his sin upon him", or telling him that his sin is taking him down. They also push Isaiah 58:1.
They're not trying to "win souls to Christ"; on the contrary, they're out to fulfill the commission they believe they've been given to preach to all the world. They're excellent wordsmiths and have done a magnificent job twisting the Bible.
I'm glad to see that a lot of the younger generation has had the courage to think for themselves and see that while the pastor may have some points right when interpreting literally, there are practices in place there that aren't Biblically sound.

Why the picketing? To impose ideas on us teens and hope we carry them for the rest of our life.
I am never for people wanting to convert people into what they believe is right.

The Westbrook baptist church shouldn't be considered a chitchat. It should be considered a hate group/ cult. They show up at military funerals with signs that say "thank god for dead soldiers/ ieds(improvised explosive device) / 9/11. They're legally protected by the first amendment. They're also know for being extremely anti gay, showing up to the funerals of gay people with signs reading "god hates fags" etc... I don't consider them christian, because they spread hate in God's name. I think they deserve to burn in hell for their behavior, but that's not my call.
And just so I don't seem like I just hate WBC, interference with or disruption of an educational institution is a class 6 felony. Also any school official has the right to make those protestors leave school grounds.

God, if you would be so kind to have their van fall off a cliff, that'd be much appreciated.
No but in all seriousness, they've abused their rights as American citizens. It's one thing to spread your hate preach in a private area. If you want to go scream about how everyone is going to hell, go ahead. But showing up to a funeral of the men and women that took the ultimate sacrifice? Hell no. They're attention seeking, moronic, brainless, dickless creatures, that need to be, well, "removed".

I pray they can see their errors before that happens. I wish Hell on nobody, even though that was just a comment, Hell is a place I'd send no man, not even my worst enemy on Earth.

I am lucky we don't have people like that in Serbia. If we do, I would kindly ask them to go fuck themselves and die in a fire for their twisted god. They do not worship the Christian God by doing deeds like this. Are they all inbred or something? This would explain a lot
