Based on a true story, Rok Biček's debut feature focuses on a tense relationship between a group of schoolchildren and their new German language teacher following a suicide that the victim's classmates blame on the teacher.
The film swept Vesna Awards at the 16th edition of the Slovenian Film Festival earlier this month after taking the top accolade at the International Film Critics' Week, an independent section of the Venice Film Festival.
The other films on the short list were Marko Naberšnik's "Shanghai", a Roma family saga, Martin Turk's family drama "Feed Me With Your Words" and Miroslav Mandić's "Adria Blues", which tells a story about a former rock star from Bosnia.
The US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will declare the nominations on 16 January and present the Oscars on 2 March.
