Which would be better as a first car, a 1997 Hyundai Excel Sprint or a 2001 Honda Integra DC5?

Is this even a question? Honda Integra, depending on its condition. Excels just drive like shit.

Yes is it a question, the reason I ask is because the excel feels more mine after working on it. I also heard about the possibility of installing a 4g63t engine into it from a dsm or lancer.

Don't know where you live in Australia, but it's illegal to swap a different engine in if you're on your P plates. You can only replace the engine if it's identical to the old one you're replacing. Dumb rules yeah, but if you know the risks (7 demerit points, so basically loss of license) then yeah, go for it.

I know about not driving it on P-Plates with engine swap, and anyway I'd use a 4g63t if I was to try anyway which is the turbo variant which restrict it from p-platers anyway :P
But Imagine it with an awesome engine, ultimate sleeper!

I think that the Hyundai Excel is the offspring of a Geo Prizm and a Toyota Echo so definitely the Actual Japanese Teggy.

I don't think this is an actual comparison. it's like comparing a Corolla to a WRX STI.

Haha, thanks. Though the question was, which would be a better first car, so not necessarily which is better :)

Neither are really a great first car. Both are FWD, and have poor safety equipment.
The Hyundai will be cheaper to run and insure. It also won't draw police attention.
The Honda may just resemble something almost nice to drive, but parts, insurance and police attention will be worse.
The Honda would be a better car to drive, but be warned that you may turn into a dickhead talking about how cool your VTEC is when your car is slow as hell.

They are all valid points, what would you recommend as a good first car then?

Hyundai Excel's here are throw-away cars.
My Sister has had three (only bought them because she got them dirt cheap) and all of them died at about 200,000km.
