View Full Version : Everyone is born with the "gay gene"?

I read a study that said everyone is probably born with the "gay gene". I guess it has to do with sexual attraction or whatever. For some it's really strong, just like some people are really tall, and for other people it has almost no effect. I don't know how true it is, but I guess that's how it's supposed to work. That might explain how some people are bisexual or asexual.

This study has actually been voided yet people are searching for a colection between genes and sexuality. The flaw is with twins, both have identical DNA and if one is homosexual, why is he or she homosexual and not their twin? The idea of sexuality being genetic is not a bad idea but I think sexuality is more developmental and fluid, maybe influenced by society and instinct to some.

I think people are just wired differently when it comes to their sexuality and that it's not a special gene or chromosome or one that has an error or a mutation or whatever. Just different traits for different people the same as all the other differences and preferences people have. It's just diversity.

The problem I see with research is, people get research grant$, so they have to come up with something to research and produce some sort of result. Then someone else gets a research grant to disprove the previous research and it all keeps going around in circles.

Interesting idea, but I doubt it's true.

I don't think that's true or at least not likely because homosexual couples can't reproduce, that being said heterosexual couples with a bisexual could..... either this gene wouldve been selected out or theres a lotttt more bisexual people in this world than you would expect.....

I personally think it's more of the development of the fetus and the way you're brought up

Surely you have a better argument other than "That's silly"?

See that's kind of my argument. I think people are born bisexual, but for whatever reason they develop into whatever orientation as they grow up.

Because identical twins still have SOME differing DNA. Exact DNA is called a clone. However it's around a 50% chance for the other identical twin to be gay, and like a 14% chance for the other fraternal twin to be gay.

There's also the theory of the hormones the child is exposed to in the womb. One twin might be exposed to more testosterone than the other? It's an interesting theory.

I would agree though. Not about the existence of a "gay gene," but that there exists in the human species an ability to be gay, not some gene that only certain people have. When I came out, my mother told me about this girl she fell in love with at uni. She was the only girl she ever had feelings for in all ways. She often says if someone like Ellen DeGeneres proposed, she would say yes lol. But this girl was a total crush, and it never happened again.

Differently but still related, I believe there is one man in my life who I did truly love and wasn't just with because I was raised that girls were "supposed" to be with men. There are still about two guys I have a crush on, but I've stated before I'm not totally gay, and I don't believe in 100% anything. I don't think black and white exist. Everything is shades of grey. The definition of humans to me is imperfection. You see fairy stories about villains who don't have a shred of good in them, but in the real world, Hitler didn't do what he did because he was trying to be evil. He did it because he thought it was right.

I thought it had already been settled that it was hormone stuff in the womb. Is that not right?

Hmm, I like the idea of hormonal imbalance in the womb better then it's no one's choice, but if scientists find this out, many mothers may try and set their unborn child straight, literally.

I don't think there is a single gene that determines a persons sexuality, I just can't fit that into my mind. Although it could have something to do with hormones.

I think this is true. It's maybe a part of the brain. I'm no expert on DNA but aren't most genes (like height, as you said) hereditary? Because homosexuality isn't- I'm homosexual and don't know of anyone in my family that is/was. Where does the gene come from? Does it just develop on its own? Does that mean there is a heterosexual gene too? But what about all the in between space- for example, there are a lot of people attracted sexually to men and romantically to women, or vice versa. What about bisexuality that is 50/50? 60/40? 70/30? How many different variations of this gene are there? Hundreds, probably, if there were a gene.

Not a gene. A gene doesn't determine a way a person behaves. Even though they do code for adaptations in certain organisms, I would guess homosexuality would not be one.

Perhaps, thought I don't see a single gene being the cause of something very complex. It could be a collection of genes and hormones that might cause it.

I've seen this thread about 100 times on VT- either people saying that's it is or is not caused by your genes. I personally don't give a fuck about it after actually thinking in depth about it. I'm gay and I'm happy with that

This is the debate sub-forum, there's supposed to be a reason why we're talking about this.

People seem to be discussing it and offering different opinions. It's not the usual "you fucktards have no fucking fucktard idea what the fuck you fucktards are fucking talking about" so-called debate.

I think the thread title was supposed to be a little sarcastic.

It's more likely nurture than nature, how you grow up determines sexuality. Maybe.

Not when you're raised with parents opposing a different sexuality.

Au contraire mon ami, not quite. It isn't always because of parents. Most people get their true thoughts and feelings on subjects and political views once they leave their parents even though our parents influence us so much during our development.

Sexual orientation is an illusion. We are sexual towards everything, it's just a matter of how much you accept it.
