View Full Version : Survey – does having anal sex mean you’ve lost your virginity?

I was reading a 2005 survey about "virginity pledges" that said girls that take a virginity pledge are 76% more likely to engage in oral and anal sex as an alternative. (Basically because teens don’t consider oral or anal sex as “Losing” their virginity).

About a month ago I posted this poll in the girls’ only forum but now I’m wondering what the general consensus is and if there is a distinct difference on the topic between boys and girls and between people that have had anal sex and those that haven't.

The poll to date has 48 (girl only) votes and it stands at 54% of girls saying that, "No, anal sex does not mean you lost your virginity."

I'm trying not complicate this too much. There are two groups of questions; one for Girls and one for Boys. They are broken into if you’ve had anal sex or not (for boys, i'm not getting into if you've given or received). Please also post any comments or thought on the subject. I’m really curious to see how people think. Thanks a lot. :D

If I was with a girl, I wouldn't consider it her losing virginity, but with a boy I do. So, I don't know how to answer the poll. Is that weird?

If you look up the root meaning of this word as it applies to sexual intercourse, a virgin is a female who's vagina has not been penetrated by a male penis. All other definitions have been added on to that.

With a guy, i'm pretty sure it does. Though with a girl, probably not.

If anal doesn't count, then I guess I'll perpetually be a virgin.

I would assume that loosing your virginity is by penetrating a vagina.

I think losing virginity = vaginal penetration, if not that means I've been lying about my virginity for quite awhile!

Personally, I think the whole concept of what is our isn't virginity is stupid.

If a girl receives anal sex then no she has not lost her virginity. If a boy receives anal sex then no he has not lost his virginity. If a boy gives anal sex then YES he has lost his virginity.

That's how I view it, anywayz.

I think you do lose your virginity. It's a form of sex, but it makes more sense if you gave it rather than received it.
And if it isn't, then apparently only people who have had sex with the opposite gender have lost their virginity.
And I don't like that viewpoint. What sex is and what it is not is not all that black-and-white :P .

I think that giving or receiving anal sex counts as losing your virginity, because it's still sex. I don't like the "having a hymen means you are a virgin" because males don't have vaginas and the hymen can be broken from things other than sex. Some girls don't have a full hymen as it normally breaks after a certain time.

I would not classify oral sex as losing someone's virginity, but this is an argument that can be interpreted 10*12^34 ways. (a big number)
