I'm quote the car guy, but I don't know much when it comes to mechanics, sadly. I know this is a stupid question, but how come there aren't more 5 cylinder engines than there are? Is it because a 6 isn't that much more powerful, and cheaper to produce or what? Thanks...

We'll it's mainly because you'll get uneven power in the pistons, that'll cause the engine to shake more leaving the metal more vulnerable to fatigue.

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks.

A five offers inherently imbalanced firing of the cylinders, so the amount of extra tech they have to put in to counterbalance that isn't financially worthwhile than either a turbo 4 or a six. Also, I heard that it costs more to make a five, the machining costs and such, they have to be made on a dedicated assembly line, whereas with 4's and 6's b/c they can share so much stuff, they can be easily made on the same line.

You people don't know your engines. A 5 cylinder motor can be found in the Chevy Colorado and the Volks Wagon beetle. And its an inline motor. Which means all the pistons are in a lines. And wat do you mean by uneven power in the cylinders? They all contribute te same amount of power.

Same question can be said for the Rotary or Boxer engine configurations :P

They were probably referring to V shaped engines. Inlines seem to not be known by most people

Yeah, that's what I was referring to. The inline. Like, why jump to the inline 6 or the V6 automatically?
It's cool that the Colorado has an I5. I didn't know that.
