I want to run a music programme Logic Pro X from an external drive.

Can anyone tell me how to do it?

Yeah....don't do it. It will be slow and buggy, the installer may or may not let you do it anyway. You may have to install it to the local drive (computer) and then use an external drive to save everything to. I would not recommend that though unless you have a USB 3.0 computer, so basically in the last year, or use Firewire 800, or Thunderbolt. Either way, it gets expensive fast.

Like Cooper said it may be slow, unless you have an SSD (i assume that would make it faster)

SSD seems like it would make it faster, however, not exactly true. If it were internal, yes. External, slight difference, not enough to really be noticeable though. The problem is USB is too slow, unless it is USB 3.0, but that all gets very very spendy.
